In short order, I will be bombing my OS/apps hard drive into oblivion to (try again) a Hackintosh install. However, it would be great if I could make a complete image of it right now and stash it on another drive so that I could store it in case I can't get Leopard running okay...along with some sort of shell to reflash it onto the drive.

Any free suggestions?

Easy McPeasy! Just use Carbon Copy Cloner. I use this all the time at work if the maintenance I'm about to perform has potential to destroy the OS. It basically makes a clone of the hard drive. If something happens to your machine, clone it back. I've used it on client and server machines with 100% success.

You will need a blank external drive to make the clone. Preferably firewire.
