So I went riding with a buddy this AM to preride the race course for tomorrow (the only local XC race this year). And the trail was packed. Everyone wanted to get in a good ride before the race tomorrow. Anyways....the point of my rant is....there are a $hit load of a$$holes here. We met one dude who was cool...but he dropped us quick & everyone else riding was taking it too damn seriously. I am sure we pissed some riders off b/c we are slow & riding non-xc bikes (me on la's bullit & my bud on his urban hucker).

I understand taking your racing seriously but I cant understand why you would take it sooooo seriously you dont have fun. None of this bothers me...I just dont understand it.

I read in someones sig once...." at the end of the day you are still just a big kid in your underwear riding a toy." or something like that.

I guess I am too laid back for the "elite racer" crowd.

good point.
i like pain too & it doesnt make me smile & wave.

We had one dude tell us to get out of the way. WTF? I am sure we were causing his heart rate to drop but an "On your right!" would be a little better than being rude. And I might add we were not out there playing but riding, in the race direction, & yielding to everyone, b/c like I said we were not riding fast.

We got snubbed in the parking lot too when we told the dudes doing trailwork good jorb & thanks. Whatever....

There are some cool people I see on the trail it just seems racing brings out the asshole in everyone here.

even if you were playing, you have just as much right to be there too. Sorry you had such a frustrating day.

The only time I think that behavoir is acceptable is during a race. Frankly, I think pre-riding should be for scouting, not some personal test. And I think if you're riding that hard, well, just how much effort is said person putting towards getting to understand the trail. I could be wrong in my approach, but pre-riding for me is far more mental than physical. I actually stop, look at the trail at various points and make mental notes as to how I want to handle sections. I bet you take two identical people, have one ride the trail as hard as possible and give the other topo maps and written reports, and I bet the reader/analyzer gets a better understanding.

That sucks dude. Even if it was the race, they were being dicks. The fact that there was no race, that's just plain inexcusable.

Come on, man. Racing is about competition. If you're a laid back dude, I'm surprised that you're racing at all......... I mean - for maximum fun factor, isn't it about riding for yourself and nobody else? Your own pace, your own path, all that jazz?

I stay the hell away from crowds. I like riding with a few buds, but any more than that and you're sure to have some hassle of some sort.

I I wanted to race, I'd probably just take out a stopwatch and race the clock......... isn't that the most pure form of racing?

Maybe I just don't get it. :D

It's a tough one. When I was racing on a course I didn't know, I usually pre-rode to see how difficult parts of the course felt at race pace, and where I had to recover and where I could keep the pace up because there was a recovery section coming up soon. I agree that some non-elite racers take the whole thing way too seriously, but the pros and anyone who wants to get there need to take it seriously. So having all sorts of tourists out on the course on pre-ride day could be a problem. There is no excuse for these racers being rude and obnoxious, but why not just ride some other trail on the day before a race and avoid the whole mess. You'd be pretty choked if you were doing DH practice runs and riders were all over the course, wouldn't you?

If it's an open trail, anyone can ride it.

Texas has one of the best series around. I don't go anymore because most folks are pricks.

My road ride was more frustrating than this though. A car load of kids took target on me. When I saw they weren't moving I hit the ditch. I didn't go down, but they missed me by about 10 feet and slung gravel on me. It was a little country loop. I was way on the side and they clearly came across at me. It was in a corner too so I couldn't get a plate. I will drive out in the morning to see if I can find the car in a drive. When I do, I will get the matches out.

Calgary, Canada eh?
One girl I work with:

"Ahh im so happy, I dont have to race this weekend"
me: "Shouldn't you want to race"
her: "So I hate racing, I just do it so I have a shot at the olympics and such.. I mean its not like DH were its fun and easy and everything"
me: "whatever.."

two weeks later.

her: "I was soo close to making a top 20 finish this weekend"
me: "what place/how many people?"
her: " I got 26th, there was 32 people there"
me: "Good luck in the 2008 olympics"

She was pissed and went on a rant about how dh is wrecking the sport and isn't mtb'ing and that she could be first in t blah blah blah. What a tool.

Dude don't even sweat it, if you recieve joy from riding, you probably have something people like that can never "truly" obtain.

yeah, but that is completely different.

I am not sweating it...I just thought it was odd. I guess that is why I like racing DH (or at least the DH races I have been too). There seems to be more comraderie in DH...I guess it could be all of the down time.

I hate it when people get in my way and won't move over. By no means am I faster than most. But I'm faster than some. Always seems to happen in the same spot on Hornet too. I come up behind someone, they KNOW I'm there, but they won't move over. I realize it's not a race. But...oh gee. I get to ride the rest of my run as fast as YOU can go. Not as fast as I'd LIKE to go. Thanks. I've even had someone yell back at me to back off because I was ridng his rear tire. Fat chance.

Now let me save you the trouble

"Goddammit MMike, I hate you. You are such a jerk. Why are you such a tool? I wish you'd stop posting here. Why does everything you say have to be so negative? This didn't even have anything to do with the thread. You peckerwood..."

that wasnt the case. It was an older middle-aged dude, probably like yourself, just being a dick to us whippersnappers. Plus the attitude was oozing...even from people not riding.

Let me guess, Shelby Farms? The last time that I went riding there (when I brought the pink Voodoo down) we ran into a bunch of 40 something, XC-wannabee, jerks. It is really close to where a friend of mine lives so it was convenient but it sorta sucked.

no, its a trail out in bartlett. since we only have two trails, the same kind of guys go to both. if we end up riding after five when everyone is off of work, its really bad. we went a couple of weeks ago after five and every asshole we ran into wouldnt yeild the trail or say thank you or even hello, when we did so i decided that i wasnt going to get out of anyones way anymore. i was training for the race too. well the next guy we came up to was on a climb and he yielded the trail for us and when we didnt acknowledge him fast enough he started bitching about trail etiquette. anyway. in the middle of the day, noone is out there so thats when we try to go. but last week my car got broken into out there so i dont think i'll be going back anytime soon.

Yeah...whatever happened to friendly competition?
Friendly competition is you and your buds seeing who can get to the top of that gnarly climb/descent fastest.

Once you sign up to race in an organized event, I think that you should be prepared that alot of people will be taking it seriously........ after all, there is money, points, schwag, bragging rights involved.

Next time this happens when you are riding your indestructable hardtail just let him get on your ass and when he starts being rude, look back like he scared you and bail and ditch the bike right in front of him in turn causing him to wreck. Don't forget to get up all pissed off and yell at him for distracting you from your line and making you wreck.
