Video Shows Girls Laughing At Armed Robbery

A Baltimore prosecutor and Mayor Sheila Dixon are expressing outrage over a video showing two girls laughing as a customer at a carryout restaurant is robbed at gunpoint by two men.

Prosecutor Jen Rallo noted during a court hearing that the video shows the restaurant continuing to serve customers after the man was shot, wounded and left bleeding on the floor.

According to a Friday report in The Baltimore Examiner, Dixon condemned the citizens in the video, saying, "It's like business as usual. Clearly ... we have some very mentally disturbed individuals in the city."

Two 17-year-olds are charged as adults in the shooting Aug. 6 at Chinese Cuisine on Harford Road.

A judge ordered the two teens tried as adults after viewing the video of the incident, the Examiner reported.

Police in the city once nicknamed "Bodymore, Murdaland," are going after the most entrenched criminals and are starting to see success. As of midnight Thursday, there were 234 homicides in 2008, down from 282 killings a year ago.

"It's an encouraging start," Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III said. "We're posting some real results."

But for a city that inspired the television crime dramas "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "The Wire," officials don't dwell on the decrease. "We have a long way to go," Mayor Sheila Dixon said.
