I work in an organization that's allegedly impartial. We have a policy against the open display of religious symbols, including mentioning any specific event such as Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Vesak, Hanamatsuri, Yule, Beltane, Lughnasadh, Ostara, Imbloc, Samhain, Diwali, Gudhi padwa......et. al.
The holiday season has several major holidays for several major religions. Why should Christians be allowed to hold it preempt everyone else's holiday? I know someone is going to make a point about the US being a Christian country....They had better check their US census data. Active Christians (defined as people going to church or other religious meetings once or more in the last six months) are now a the largest minority. There are significant numbers of Agnostic(religiously inactive), Atheists, Jews, and Muslims in the US, and millions of people who are Buddhist, Hindu, Pagan, Sikh or other religions. Why should they have Christmas shoved down their throats?
I 've actually had to explain by using an example: How would you feel if you went to court, and everyone on the jury, and every court staff member was wearing a Muslim holy symbol? How would you feel if you worked at a place the celebrated all the Muslim, Hindu, Pagan, Buddhist or other religions holidays but didn't even mention yours? Would you be upset if you were required to work Christmas and were required to take day off during Ramadan? My organization has a policy that allows employees to swap holidays off, if it is convenient for the organization. Otherwise you are SOL. I take Christmas off as a Commercial holiday, not a religious one.
Why worry? Just have a good time with your family and friends, and be happy you are getting time off from the daily grind. Just let people be and celebrate your chosen holiday or mental health day in peace.
im a liberal atheist, yet i see no problem w/ religious holidays
i dont despise religion-its just not my thing
i say blame the -southern baptist (for ruining halloween)
o and the mormons for generally being whores and knocking on my door early in the morning
i enjoy simply celebrateing the season and a general show of kindness from everyone around me so Happy Season of Peace and a merry christmas (for all that it CAN represent)
I have noticed many stores not saying merry Christmas in stores, with many groups campaigning against Christmas in public. I do not get why people are so offended about an OFFICIAL holiday. Second stores are not the government and such places as stores and home do not violate separation of church and state laws. I am starting to get quite angry with this, and Im Jewish. I like Christmas and love seeing decorations, as well as the Christmas spirit. Why are people so offended by a holiday?
As much as I like getting this holiday off from work, I don't think we should get it off. It is a violation of the separation of church and state to have xmas as an "OFFICIAL" holiday. If the gov. wants to give everyone one floating "OFFICIAL" holiday per year, then it would be all right.

How can you say that we shouldn't get this time off? We should get this time off and more! In fact if anyone has an issue with us getting a day off for a holiday that is aligned to a Christian celebration I have a solution. Give us a day off for every other celebration connected to any and every other religion. That's fair.
Alternatively do what the Spanish do and take random days off every week.

Oh, I'm all for time off from work, and that's why it pains me to say it, but in the interest of separation of church and state, we should not get xmas off. If they give us "a day off for every other celebration to any and every other religion" that gets closer to being equitable.
