Hey, I just want to say hi first from Scotland, as this is my first post on here.
Anyway, I've had my '01 Stab with Stratos MX-6's for a few months now and overall I'm very pleased with it. I do think it's allowed me to ride faster. However, one of the reasons I bought a Kona was because I heard in various reviews that they are very plush and react well to all sizes of bumps. Now the suspension is good, but it seems that its set up for taking bigger hits (drops etc.) rather than tracking over roots and rock gardens. Thing is, I prefer to ride DH through rock gardens etc., rather than purely 'hucking' so I think I may be missing out here.
I'm about 5 foot 9, weight about 10 1/2 stone (probably about 11 in full gear), have a 2" stroke shock on a 6" travel bike with a 550lb spring. I checked with the Mojo spring calculator and apparently I should have a 545lb spring, so basically 550lb like I've got. I tried a mates spare spring, a 450lb one, and the ride was very plush, but just sitting on it made it go to 40-50% travel in sag, so I gave it back to him. However, I was just thinking that I had it in the more forward of the shock bolt holes, what I'm led to believe is the one for linear travel. So my questions are firstly do Konas normally need a lighter spring than standard if you want small bump performance over the ability to take 15ft drops? Secondly would you recommend I got the spring back off my mate, put the shock in the more rearward hole (progressive I think?) so that it's plush at first but ramps up for big drops or would it be best to get a 500lb spring? Would a 500lb spring actually make much noticeable difference?
Cheers for any help,
Mark
