Mine BB has kicked the bucket and needs replacing. So the question is...What's the best bottom bracket? (68x113) Also, why is it that just about every BB listed in mtbr has such a pissy rating?

My Evolve BB was gritty after a month of riding about twice a week.

I've got an FSA Platinum Pro right now that I like... My best luck always came from Shimano Octalink BBs but obviously you'd need new cranks ;)

I HATE the FSA Platinum Pro I had... self extracting crank bolts stink. Unless Im just an idiot and had it wrong.

Ive always gone Truvativ...

Self-extracting crankbolts stink?

Self-extracting crank bolts are possibly one of the greatest inventions ever. I'm seriously curious as to what problems you've had with them? I carry mine over from crankset to crankset.

I'm not sut what that has to do with bottom brackets anyway, though...

I could just be an idiot... The bolts on the Platinum Pro kept coming loose no matter what I did. More torque, Loctite, you name it. They sucked.

Oh, I see. That's probably not the fault of the self-extracting crank bolts (since the only difference between self-extracting bolts and normal bolts is a collar that screws over the top of them), but it may easily have been poor tolerance on either the bolt or the spindle.

I'd recommend you give the self-extracting bolts themselves another shot, even if you never go back to the FSA bottom bracket. I think they're absolutely awesome, one less tool to carry. It also allows you to take the crank arms off on the trail if you need to.

Since I am a Binary Visions fan (Ive lurked a lot of threads youve weighed in on), I will definitely give them another chance :agree: . Have any reccommendations on where to get them? I dont know much about them--are there aftermarket bolts available somewhere? And I assume I just need to make sure I have the right thread (like M12?)?

To be honest, I got mine stock off a set of XT cranks and have been swapping them from cranks to cranks ever since. They've worked on every set of cranks I've used them on (XT, FSA V-Drive Xtreme, RaceFace Prodigy DH, and a couple other cranks that my friends have had).

I just found a set of them at thethirdhand.com:

Bolt: http://tinyurl.com/lh39c
Cap: http://tinyurl.com/md95d

You need both pieces and at $10 per part, for a total of $20 per side, that's damn pricey. I'm not sure I'd spend $40 on them... but then again, I've spent $40 on a lot of things that I've used a lot less than these small parts.

Anyway, now you know what they are in case you ever want them :p

I have all 3, FSA, Raceface, and Truvativ....

FSA and Raceface both use the same ISIS tool, Truvativ doesn't (sucks)so you need a different tool to tighten the cups.

All 3 spin about the same. The FSA is a Platium pro, the Truvativ is their whatever......ISIS pro DH, and a Raceface Freeride BB (the lower end $35 ones). I liked the bearings on the FSA and the Truvativ more than the Raceface but so far, 3 years, all are OK. Never had an issue with any.

I do recall though that one of them uses funny crank bolts (I think it was Truvativ). The BB didn't come with them and I had to get some crank bolts. Other than that though they are all very very similar.
