My wife's '92 Stumpjumper had a loose bottom bracket. I told my LBS that if they couldn't fix it, to replace it with UN72, or something equivalent. Whatever they used, the spindles are silver-colored -- aren't UN-72s black? And its threads are sticking out slightly on the left side. Would this indicate that they used the wrong length? I really don't want to take it apart myself to doublecheck, but I don't want to confront them without more knowledge.

Thanks all!

I think you're right about UN72 being black. The older squre XTR's were silver and UN-52s are too. Its normal for a few threads to be showing on the left side. If its shifting the same assume they used the same length spindle or at least one close enough.

Nope, the UN-72 spindle is silver.
