There is a green trail to the road ready to roll, it just needs sunshine.Thanks. I think I'll hold out til there is a full green top to bottom. To take them and the missus on hardtails would be $120 to ride half of one trail. Can't take one without taking the others.
Cool. I'll check it out next ride. My girls are fearless, but not skilled yet so I gotta protect them from themselves. They get over their heads on things.

Hey all! I'm looking at doing the first race in this series as my first downhill race. No real aspirations to do well, just want to try it and survive! Will the beginner course be doable on a 6" trail bike? Should I look into any pads? I'd consider myself to an advanced intermediate rider and am comfortable on technical terrain, but have never ridden lift access before. I've looked at videos, and it doesn't look that bad. Of course videos of Farlow don't look that bad either... Any advice is appreciated!
Yes get some pads and a fullface helmet is required. Beech has several lines down the mtn so you can choose an easier line and it's not a sin to walk your bike past rougher places.Do a lot of practice runs and you'll be fine.
swapping out your regular tires and tubes (if you are running tubes) for dh specific tubes/tires might not be a bad idea.
Cool, thanks for the responses. I have a fullface the LBS gave me as a joke after a nasty crash which I can finally use! I'm looking forward to it. I'm a painful equipment geek and have always been drawn to cross bikes and downhill bikes as the most beautiful of all. If this goes well I think it may get expensive!

I rode my 145mm rear/ 160mm front, 2x10 trail bike there all day Friday and Saturday two weeks ago and had a blast. I do recommend two ply DH tires, full face helmet and armor to taste. Yes, if you do this you will be buying a bike soon!
Oh, go with bigger rotors if you have them. Two full days will toast 160's. I will be there this weekend and would be happy to show you the "trail bike" lines.
Sorry, more pestering here! My trail bike is a Trek Slash 7, but I run a single ring with a chain guide and some I9 enduro wheels. I've got the old ****kicker wheels I could throw back on. Any recommendations for tires in the NC hills?

My band has a gig in Asheville on Thursday night (we're at a place called the 1 stop if anybody's interested I may have guest list spots,) so I'd be (more) worthless on Friday than another day. I live in Winston, so not a big deal to get up there anytime.

Maybe put some DH tires on your stock wheels?I am partial to specialized tires but a DH casing is what I would recommend for resort riding.Butchers and clutches are what I usually run.

If you're burning money on a new set of rubber for Beech, I'd save time and go with the best overall in betweener and get a set of Maxxis or Specialized mud spikes and snip a hair off the center knobs. Then you can run that one pair rain or shine.
Maxxis Minion DHF or Specialized Butcher seem to be the most popular. Personally I have run Minion DHF's front and rear for years, but am trying out the DHR-II in the rear this go around. As long as it isn't completely muddy, I've never had problems with the DHF's.
I will be at Beech Friday and maybe Sunday. 2.5 Maxxis Minion DHFs or 2.35 Schwalbe Muddy Marys are my favorites. Come on out Friday. I work till 7am and will be sleep deprived so we can suffer together.

That's hilarious, I'm using Muddy Mary 2.35s as my trail tires! Guess I'm more prepared than I thought! I'll do my damnedest to get out on Friday, but may need to juggle stuff around. What time are you thinking? If I can't get the afternoon clear I'll go for Sunday. Maybe I can meet some of you out there!

At this moment ability(surgery) is slowing me down, other wise I would be at Beech or Windrock or Snowshoe or Timberline or Mountain Creek or Plattekill or Whistler or etc-etc.

What kind of bike is he riding?
The trails were near perfect yesterday (7-12). Very little mud. The lower mountain is bleeding water like crazy, but the flow is well managed. Good job Beech Mountain! Thanks to Rex Diablo for keeping me company (yeah, he's probably hooked)
Not a mud bath at all. Rode clutches all day and hooked up just fine.
It was great up there today. I rode spikes in the early morning but would have been happy to have them off by noon. The trails have held up amazingly well given all the rain they've had. The jumps/berms/tables at the bottom were reworked as well and are great. Can't wait to get back up there!
