when was there a road gap at beech?Oh, thanks to advances in technology, you may actually be able to finish a Beech Mountain race with your bike intact. Could the curse be lifted this year?
For those not in the know, when Ryan first came on the scene back in the day , his bike utterly despised him at Beech. Most non-lethal, near death crash I've ever seen was his BB sheering off coming down the drop to the road.
OK, I take that back. Fred launching his bike no brake style 15 feet high into an oak and himself into a hickory a few feet lower going off of the road.
No, wait. Herndon's wreck onto the road was gruesome.
Maybe it IS good that the old road drop is gone.

There was never a Road Gap at Beach, just a small Table Top before the road after the big drop out of the woods. It took a lot of people out due to having to scrub so much speed before crossing the road to the drop down to the rock garden. Most people got bucked off the table trying to do so. One of my favorite parts of the old race course. Hell I remeber us cuting in that part of the course and was like this has to be the longest Rock Garden on the East Coast.way back in the good old days
Actually it was a small double after a nasty drop out of the woods before crossing the road into the rock garden. Herndon barely cased the lip of the lander and it pitched him 7 feet in the air superman style. He smacked the pavement like a bag of wet cement. The sound or body armor and bones breaking was quite disturbing. There was never a Road Gap at Beach, just a small Table Top before the road after the big drop out of the woods. I was so proud of everybody that day. They thought I was insane when I looked left, pointed into the boulders and moss and said: "We'll go that way." If I recall, it was Steve Kaufma, Jeremy, you, Tyler, Fred Schuldt, Steve Owens, Jack?, Matt and a boatload of others who followed me into the woods as I went blindly hacking a straight line through blast rock. There was never a Road Gap at Beach, just a small Table Top before the road after the big drop out of the woods. Actually, everybody is a bit off. It was a "double" yes, but basicly a pair of natural rollers after that drop. Herndon went far right and there was a hole in the face in the grass you couldn't see. It bucked you b/c it looked smooth, but was HUGE and bottomless. I only know b/c I watched him hit it and he then gave me his bike to ride for the race. I then hit the exact same spot and Cecil thought I died....Actually it was a small double after a nasty drop out of the woods before crossing the road into the rock garden. I will hand it to you, it was one of your best finds!!!!! I just remember us practicing that rock garden for hours one day before a race having so much fun, and then I crashed and landed in a hole (the only place where there was no rocks, but were my hip landed). I just laid there and let you guys ride over me for the rest of the day. I cracked my left Hip pointer that day. So much pain!!!! Still raced the next day and placed top 5. Not too bad for not being able to pedal my bike that day. Had to keep my points lead for the series!!!! What great times.I was so proud of everybody that day. Woulda sucked if I'd guessed wrong. Remember the bunny hop log of death?
It depends what class you wish to enter, Cat 2/3 don't require a permanent license and you'll have to get the 1-day which is $5. Cat 1/Pro require a license, which a Cat 1 is $60 for the year, and Pro is $150 which you can get at www.usacycling.orgok im confused, i have to pay the normal entry fee which is fine, but then i have to also buy some license to say i can ride a bike down a mountain? or am i way off in left field here?
Ok well i have not raced a US saction race so what does cat 1,2,3 stand for? each one. and can we just buy the license that day at the race if im doing like beginner or intermediate (whatever cat that would be?)It depends what class you wish to enter, Cat 2/3 don't require a permanent license and you'll have to get the 1-day which is $5. Southern Rocks called. It wants you to know it still owns that title.was like this has to be the longest Rock Garden on the East Coast.

Yes, this was way before Southern Rocks was found. Just saying what we said that day when it was found.Southern Rocks called. It wants you to know it still owns that title.
the only rock garden longer than Southern Rocks is Stone Mountain, Georgia...and well...can't ride that.Southern Rocks called. It wants you to know it still owns that title.
Cat 3 is beginner, Cat 2 is sport/intermediate Cat 1 is expert (and sort of includes the semi-pro which has been done away with). Cat 3/2 will have one day licenses available for $5Ok well i have not raced a US saction race so what does cat 1,2,3 stand for? each one. and can we just buy the license that day at the race if im doing like beginner or intermediate (whatever cat that would be?)
5-6 runs seems to be on the low side, we've left 5 hours of pratice time, should be plenty of room for more.$150.00 license, $40.00 entry, maybe 5-6 runs...ouch.
Friday Pratice doesn't look like its going to happen. There is still a possiblity of an open ride day, but the earliest it will be is between race #1 and race #2Any update on the public day or having a Friday practice session?
Yep, Dan that is what was supposed to happen when USA cycling took the semi-pro class away. Most of us were supposed to fall back into the Cat. 1 category.Man yall could just get your downgrade to cat 1 then you'd only have a 60 dollar fee, plus you "pro's" could mob the podium too...
the level of my denial will depend greatly on how much money is in the coffers when it comes time to buy.Yep, Dan that is what was supposed to happen when USA cycling took the semi-pro class away. Most of us were supposed to fall back into the Cat. 1 category.
But for some reason they left every single semi-pro the option of "buying" theirself a pro license for $150. Lame.
Ha, I had to get an annual license earlier in the year for a couple of XC races, so I will racing Cat. 1 at the Beech series.
Just do Cat1 Butch, it's ok.$150.00 license, $40.00 entry, maybe 5-6 runs...ouch.

looks like copy and paste got me in trouble...sorry no lift for slalom...not a bad walk though, tracks built steeper than the actual walking path up with the way that dirts been dug out and added in...kinda hard to explain, but you'll love it!sweet! the DS registration says "Entry Fee includes lift ticket"! awesome...'cause i hate pushing my bike up the DS hill
I'm coming in full throttle with tons of nitrous in the bottle!So...I'm probably the only one that feels this way, but having practice immediately followed by the race does that course no justice at all. Last year was particularly fun up at beech due to the course being taped wide and the variety of lines to scope. Not to mention, it's hard not to burn yourself out in practice and be toast for your race run.
My whole point here is that you should try to get an extra practice day for the next race. Plus, camping up there was fun as well.
