who makes a good one? all the ones on NB seem kinda chincy, and the test jars don't seem much better. Is it worthwhile to get an application specific model? or could I get away with a turkey baster and a graduated cylinder?

Yeah the NB ones blow but that's what I use. I'm on my second one. The first one cracked down the side, but they did send me a replacement one at no charge.

what about something like this:

and then a graduated cylinder to go with it?

or this:

would it be safe to put the sample back into the fermenter as long as the equipment had been fully sterilized prior to use?

that thief looks tiny. is that a gallon carboy?

I would just use a cheap graduated cylinder....& samples are what? only 4oz if that...just drink it!

I use this and it's great. Sanitize it carefully and you can drain the beer right back into the fermenter. Means you can take as many readings as you want without losing beer, and it's one less thing to clean since you can take the reading right in the thief.

It's cheap plastic but it's not exactly an abusive environment.

The geek in me wants a refractometer, though :nerd:
