What type of chain seems to be strongest for freeriding? I seem to be going through chains quit a bit lately.

if you go thru a lot of chains, are you one of those poor folks who puts Shimano chains back together without using the "special" pin? They'll pop pretty easily if you don't use that pin.

Other than that, Sram PC-58 or 59 (8 or 9sp) have been 100% flawless for me over the past 4-5 years.

Sram chains are foolproof with the powerlink. I ran the hollow pin all season without issue.

Also, if you use shimano chains you need to install properly. I can tell you how many times ive heard people say shimano chains suck only to find they didnt install them correctly........

what speed you running? how worn (ie old) are your cassette and rings? how often do you actually clean, lube, and maintain your drivetrain?

Sram chains are tits! PC-58/59 (speed dependant) are rocks. if you're a weight weenie, go pc-99. It's a roadie chain, but strong as hell.
Check your shifting/drivetrain. Maybe your rings are worn.

PC99 hollowpin hasn't led me astray.

That is a good start. When I replace my chain, I replace the chainrings, cassette, and derailer all at the same time. Unless, everything still looks good.

I have problems too. Probably because I'm a fat bast@rd. I have ran everything and broke them all. My biggest problems came from sram(gold link and the hollow chain). Right now I'm on a deore.

How exactly should a chain be made specifically for "freeriding?" Should it be stronger than, say, a road chain...? Roadies sure don't put any stress on their chains.

(yeah, I know, it'll come in rootbeer and take drops to flat and Bender will use it...)

The strongest chain I have ever used is the shimano CN7701 XTR/Dura Ace. It's not too hard on the wallet at around $30 usually (when a hollow pin PC99 runs around $50 at a LBS).

I've broken all of them (sram, old shimano, KMC, etc) except for this one, and I've replaced CN7701s on a normal schedule, but never have had one fail. The mushroom shaped pins keep the links from sliding off the pins, and that seems to be the most common type of chain failure. They are simply great chains and hold up to extreme amounts of torque and force. Most people that b*tch about shimano chains are talking about the older generation ones and they have never tried this chain, in fact I've recently found a lot of shops that love to bag on these things and they follow a classic patter; "oh, all those shimano chains break", "No, we haven't tried that chain, but all shimano chains break". Whatever, these things are worth a lot more to me than the price they usually go for, and the less popular they are then the better for me, but I don't see anything special about any SRAM chains these days. I've broken them and they seem to hold up a bit better than older shimano chains, but then again that's simply not a very fair comparission.

more info...what frame, rings, cassette this may help us help you with a more informative decision...it could be a simple as you chain being to short once the suspension cycles...there are a lot of variables...D

Shimano 7401 (for eight speed setup), or Shimano 7700 (for nine speed setup). I'm a big fan of eight-speed, for longer life, and less ghostshifts.
IMO the SRAM chains is nowhere near the shimano. The rollers on the SRAM chains has craced after a while, on those I've had. (Mostly PC68).
