rockgardn's cya short is nice. Tons of pads. But doesn't get in the way. And they breath. Just make sure you wear some other shorts over them cause they are see thru.
ive got some old fox shorts that are great. Im not sure what model they are as they were given to me, but they might be the 360's from 2 years ago.
I dont really support/like fox stuff but the shorts have great protection which is why i use them. The logo right above the knee is real thick rubber and really big, and it has removable hip pads that are super comfortable and you cant even tell are there and cover most of the area you usually hit.
I like the Pearl Izumi the best but they are way too expensive. Then just a DH shorts shell over the top. I get a sore arse too but never when I wear the Pearl Izumi.
Do not get the Crash Pads shorts. They have great hip and thigh protection but they rub the arse really bad. I could hardly walk after a day of wearing the crash pads because the arse padding is sooooo cheap and uncomfortable. Talk about being rubbed raw....
If you put the padding that comes with fox shorts they work pretty well. I would however get the Dainese bibs. The padding on the thighs is awesome, however no bum coverage.

choose the MTB stuff for the MTB short protector
and then winter for the short protector plus and soft. Not sure how well these would work for you due to the tailbone pad..may be uncomfortable sitting on.

I think he's more looking for crash pads than ass pads. The cya short from rockgarn really is great. Tons of padding in all the right places yet completely unobtrusive when it comes to pedaling. Obviously they're overkill for an epic xc ride. Completely unnecessary. But when paired with mx style dh shorts like the Azonic Catalyst they're perfect for burly downhill runs or free riding. great hip and thigh protection. And after the first few minutes you forget you're even padded down there. But after a few good spills on rocky trails you'll really appreciate them.
note: I have the original version of this short. Its been updated. But rockgardn has a solid product line so I can only imagine they improved on them.
Just fall more, eventually the nerve endings will get desensitized to it....
I used to have a 3/4 Dainese suit that was pretty rad as far as thigh protection went. My first season it may have even saved me from a broken femur. The thing to remember when we are talking about preventing soft-tissue damage is that something that is effective at preventing scabs may not be as effective at preventing more serious injury from blunt trauma.
That being said, I don't ever wear any thigh or hip padding anymore. My hips actually are desensitized to road rash after 14+ years of racing. I invite any northeastern riders to approach me at the next race and jab me with pins. I seriously can't feel it as anything more than dull pressure.
My shins are even worse. My tibalis anterior muscle won't even grow any more they are so roached. In high school I used to stick safety pins through them to get kicked out of class.
So, unless you want to end up a freaky old gimp like me buy the nicest, most protective pads you can get, and actually wear them.
