Best skate vid ever?

Skate vids are all like cheap porn. All packaging and intro and then the same crappy camcorder footage for filler.

But yeah I thought the same thing when I saw that intro:D

Still going to be a bunch of crappy fisheye follow cam through some schoolyard though. I long for the days of stacy peralta's vids.

Stuff blowing up is cool, but not a fan in a skate video.

I just bought my 11 year old son a Colin McKay signature board and it makes me want to skate. As soon as the weather clears, I am hitting the skate park with my Steadham circa 1990. It's HUGE compared to the 7.5 for my son. :D

Jealous???!! I know I am. SOme took a class and a lot of time to use compositing and other stuff I know nothing about. I thought it was awesome.

I'm starting to think as a group we aren't as nice and intelligent as skaters because their sport gives back and keeps evolving in so many ways, while mountian biking always gets set back every 5 years to 1994 in terms of participation, sponsorship, TV and entertainment..

Looks interesting. It is by Girl Films and I was a giant fan of Yeah, Right! when it came out. I'd really like to see a bike version of some of the things they pulled in that vid. The gist of what went on: some scenes had the skateboards or the kickers painted green so that they could be green-screened out later. The result was incredible. When the boards weren't there, the riders looked like superheroes floating around and re-inventing the cityscape. When the kickers weren't there, the riders just looked like normal skaters with insane pops. What kind of craziness would go on in a bike vid that utilized the same techniques?

I have 1-8 of the original Bones Brigade videos (yes, on VHS originals). I have a bunch of random ones, but the only newer ones I got were the DC Shoes video and Round 3 with Mullen.

Mullen is just bad ass to watch. He makes it look effortless and it pisses me off, but it's still bad ass.

I'm jealous of a few editing techniques I see in a few of them (like I said, mainly intros) but that's it. I think the meat of every video I've seen in the last few years is pathetic. Not color balanced, flat light, camcorder looking poop. I wasn't kidding when I implied that peralta's vids 15 years ago were more creative. The fisheye camcorder thing in the first H-street video changed the rules........not for the better.

That's the weirdest sentence I've ever read.:D

Mountain bikers' toys cost 4k+, skateboards cost $150. Who spent more time in college? Just kidding...... sort of.

There's no generalization you can make about the 'niceness' of either population. Both have their pricks and both have their saints. And skateboarding has had its ebbs and flows in population just like bikes. Go look at rampage 1 and then the last crankworx. There's just as much evolution there as in skating. To me it seems other than a few people like bob burnquist and danny way, skateboarding has just become how many times you can flip your board and land on it. That to me seems stagnant from a time when that riding was one aspect of a much more multi faceted sport.

I think it's important to not confuse 'giving back' with being emulated. Snowboarding and such have benefitted but only because skateboards were easier to build and use.

And I don't view this as an 'us' vs 'them'. Trust me. I've spent way more years on a board than a bike;)

I used to be able to say that, but I'm old now.

As far as "giving back", I spent a lot of time on city planning meetings over getting public skate parks planned and built. This was AFTER switching to bikes, but I wanted my sons to have places to skate where they didn't get grief from The Man like I did as a kid.

The nice thing about mountain bikes is there is only one place I like to ride where I'm not supposed to. The only reason I'm not supposed to ride there is because of idiots that don't understand how to share a trail.

I know a lot of skaters that don't understand what goes into getting a park built. But there are a lot of bikers that have done trail work and understand the effort that goes into it.

Hey you want to rip me a copy of public domain?

I can give you a copy of animal chin that might be in better shape than yours. Watching skateboarders act makes my baby jeebus cry.:D
With that link Stevew posted, there is no need. I do need to get a VHS to dvd at some point because my H-Street Hokus Pokus video has worn holes into the tape from being played for 20+ years :D

I'm not passing out neg rep, but I should.

btw - why no 'Big Boys'???
The concave was awful, they had bad flex, and the nose/tail lacked any usable shape.

75% of my tricks were ollie based. I needed a rigid board with good shape. My Blockhead Team board was the best street board, but they were not durable because of the fiber layer between the plys.

My Jason Jesse Neptune board had hops. I got so much lift from that board, it was insane. I cleared my first trash can on that board (1987? Fu<k, I feel old now).

<edit> Same board as the "team" with different graphics.

I was always just a big ollie/big grind rider. I always land with my rear foot on the tail to be set up for another trick without moving my foot. So if a board was weak it might last me a week. Powell Bonite boards lasted, but they were mushy.

That crap disintegrated so badly we used to use 'bonite' as an adjective to describe something that was weak.

Your lipslides are bonite yo.:D

Kidwoo, I have to disagree with you on the evolution of videos/tricks/etc., have you watched Kyle Leepers parts? or Leo Romeo? Mike Carrols Part in Fully Flared? The evolution of skateboarding is far ahead of ANY sport out there. The simple fact that there is an endless amount of trick combos leaves the imagination to wander so far you can't find limits. MTBikes have very slow evolution and haven't had much in the last three years. Basagotia's part from two disorders ago is still the standard for parts coming out now. I think the only new trick I have seen on a moutnain bike lately is the superman backflip. I hear Chris Akrigg is going to be the next evolutionary step in mtbing but as of today it's about where skating was before the shackle me not video came out. Bmxrs are pretty progressive also, they are ALWAYs comin out with crazy new stuff. MTBers are not. If I had five kids that were "trick" oriented and were willing to sack up I could bring Mtbin into the same threshold as Skating and Bmxing. It takes vision and insane dedication to get to that next level and right now freeriders are scared of going there. They're comfortable making their money and staying "equal" with the next guy. Basagotia was very progressive when he first hit the scene, Lacondeguey seems pretty progressive, Greg Watts and Cam McCaul are pretty progressive and a few of the Cut guys and Lenosky are creative but what I'm talking about is the progression that happens between Animal Chin and Shackle me not. Then evolving into hokus pokus and then Plan B. Those were the biggest steps to date because everything was new...EVERYTHING. Then Mouse came out and Marianos part set everyone on their ear again.

Heath Sherratt, you should be banned from skate talk on this board. Only because your skill level far surpassed a level any of us would have been happy to reach. :D

The love/hate relationship I have with skating is mostly about street and society.

Love: I love the idea of free parks (having started at places like Upland Pipeline, Big O, Heat Wave, and Del Mar myself) where nobody can hassle you. It's awesome for kids to hang out and toss out tricks.

Hate: I hate having to keep kids confined to pre-made parks with no natural terrain and very little change.

For me, skating with guys like Mark Gonzales, Matt Hensley, Tommy Guerrero, Mike Vallely, and Jason Jesse on any given street in any given town was all about personal expression. "Hey, check out this little lip right here..." seeing who could come up with what on or over whatever was around. Who could come up with AND LAND the craziest crap ever.

Now the Dew Tour and the X-Games have "street" comps with an assortment of ramps? I still watch and I still enjoy the tricks and variations. But the fact is, it's just not the same.

YESSSSSSsssssss.

Who is that "have you seen him" guy?? Yes, I'm an idiot.

Kidwoo, good points. Never meant to be us vs them, just wish I could ride around a town and see half as many kids on mountain bike/dirt bikes as skater-your cost factor may be key.

Crankworx is Canada, where the sport is just growing so much faster. The fact Drop In is a televised show there illustrates how they already passed us- and "americans" started the mountain bike thing.

FYI- I hate fisheye too.

All you have to do is look at the North Shore to see that. Hell, of the 5 ski resorts that are in Oregon, only 2 support bikes (and they are the smallest too).

Matt Hensley's part in Shackle Me Not is still incredible. Not sure what Powell vid. Guy Mariano first appeared in but I just remember his part being freakin amazing- skating to some Jackson 5 song- just awsome.
