wow, what a range of artists...

Current favorites:
Diana Reeves
Patti Austin
Diane Shure
Tony Benett (saw him live this summer and he killed it)
Brook Benton (is he still alive?)

Oh, for just a 'voice' (not a singer) I can't forget Rakim and Guru, two of the smoothest sounding MCs.

All time favorite voice has got to be Ella Fitzgerald.
In my mind, no one can compare to Ella, but Billie Holiday comes in a close second.

Maynard James Keenan (Tool)
Thom Yorke
Tori Amos
Koko Taylor

I'm also a huge fan of the Mississippi hill country bluesman's primal wail, see:
Junior Kimbrough
RL Burnside
Fred McDowell
Son House

Also Howlin' Wolf

Carrying the torch:
Erica Wennerstrom (The Heartless Bastards)
Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys)

I grew up on 80's music, so I know I'm gonna get blasted but...

Marq Torein BulletBoys -very powerful voice
David Lee Roth - The VH stuff without question is good, but I love A Little Ain't Enough (solo album). Some really good bluesy stuff in there.
Axl - he's got range.
Rob Halford - THE METAL GOD
more modern stuff
Tori Amos - great soft tones, very soothing and smokin hot
The kid from Lifehouse. I don't know why, I just think he has a great 'rasp' to his voice.
John Lennon - I mean come on

I think it really depends on the genre of music, but here is my top ten in no particular order.
1. Allsion Krause (She could sing me to sleep any night)
2. Sarah Brightman (Christine in the original Phantom of the Opera)
3. Mariah Carey (I don't like her music but she has an amazing range)
4. Geoff Tate (Queensryche)(I thought I read somewhere he can sing through EIGHT octaves!
5. Josh Groban (Very relaxing for rigors of the day)
6. Jim Croce (one of the best singer songwriters)
7. Patsy Cline (Where to begin?Where to End?)
8. Freddie Mercury (Operaetic voice to Rock-n-Roll)
9. Enya (Beautiful and dynamic voice)
10. Aretha Franklin (truly the queen of soul)

Saw this thread on another forum and thought it was pretty cool. I know there are some of you :monkey:s are real music buffs, so I thought it was worth posting here.

Who are some of the best (notice I did not say "favorite") voices in music right now? For those of us who aren't music buffs, please post the band/group the person is with so we know who you are talking about.

I'm not a music buff, so take this with a grain of salt... but here are my top 3:
- Harry Connick Jr.
- Sara McLaughlin
- Lindsey Buckingham (guitarist and occasional singer from Fleetwood Mac)
- the dude from System of a Down
that appears to be four but I've always been a fan of Madona, Jack Johnson, and Chris Martin as far as voice is concerned

James LaBrie (Dream Theater)
Ray Alder (Fates Warning)

I guess I'm not the only fan of old blues here, you cant leave out the man himself Muddy Waters...also I truly dig Skip James, T-bone Walker, Blind Willie Johnson, John Lee Hooker...etc etc. Although they arent all from mississippi they all rock

i find it funny that people ditch on the white stripes...they couldn't have come out a more unlikely scenario...by the 3rd lp they were still on the tiny Sympathy for the Recording Industry label, and somehow a movement started, someone at a big label decided to reissue that cd (_white blood cells_) on their label, and it snowballed from there. their popularity certainly didn't just stem from the "critics".

back on topic - greg weeks has a lovely singing voice.

I suppose that you are right.......that being said, it's all personal preference (I'm sure that you don't share my tastes in music.....and there is nothing wrong with that...)

i'm not a big stripes fan myself but i do dig some stuff ("dead leaves and the dirty ground" is a great song) from 'em. they clearly weren't the product of a hype machine like ashlee simpson or someone like that though.

randy blithe - lamb of god
burton c. bell - fear factory
trevor phipps - unearth
bjorn strid - soilwork
anders friden - in flames

out of all those, i would say burton is the only one that can realy "sing," but the rest have just plain cool vocals.
