I will be flying into CA, somewhere, on Wed. before the Championships. Which is best city to fly into?

San Francisco or LA?

Bakersfield??? I don't think there's anywhere close to Mammoth that has an airport. It may actually be a little closer to fly in to Las Vegas then take whatever highway that is through Rachel NV and the fabled Area 51 to 395.

If you're going to head to Mammoth from the south I'd reccomend flying into Ontario rather than LAX, it's a lot easier to get in and out of.

The only problem is that I am using Skymiles award tickets and Reno isn't an option. Las Vegas, LAX, or San Fran. Of these which is better?

would you rather drive through endless dessert or over mountain roads. If you prefer the desert head out from Las Vegas, otherwise fly into san fransisco. I wouldn't even mess with LAX, that place is a zoo.

And the worst part is that delta starts service to reno this winter. The drive from LA is pretty close to that of Vegas but Getting out of LA could be a traffic nightmare depending on the time of day. But then again so could SF.
Once you get out of LA or Vegas, it's nothing but you and desert so the driving is pretty hassle free but longer in distance.

Check on Sacramento flights. I know Delta has service there. I've flown direct flights to the east coast several times from Sac. That would be your best bet. Northern California airports will be closer but you have to drive through Yosemite National park on highway 120 (that could be a good thing if you've never been there), or over Sonora Pass, highway 108 (almost as beautiful a drive as Yosemite).

If you've got time you could go the north route through Tahoe and we could get a couple of runs in at Northstar. ;)

Check Sacramento and see what you come up with.

RENO is closer than any airport in california and is the nearest non-municipal airport to mammoth.
Reno is the way to go.
It's only a couple of hour drive from Reno.
It's gonna be atleast a 4 hour drive from SF and from LA it'll be even more.

Very interesting.

My wife will be coming with me and we have kinda wanted to make 'trip' out of it. Plus the more days I spend at higher altitude helps me out.

Skip on LA, the drive from LA to Mammoth would be 2X the length of your flight.

Las Vegas and up US Hwy 95 would be the closest to a major hub., Still looking at 200+ miles of driving though.

In that case, you could make a loop. Tahoe on the way to mammoth and yosemite on the way back. Fun for the whole family. Keep me posted, it would be great to meet you. I'm planning on going to the mammoth race anyway just to spectate.

I can do Sacramento easily enough. Only two legs on the way there, but we would be able to fly out until Monday, which isn't that bad. We could then spend Sunday watching the pro's or riding N*. I'm going to look into this more.

Thanks kidwoo, it would great to ride at N* and to met as well.

FWIW, I'm driving from S.F. and the way to go is 580/205/120 (through upper Yosemite area - Tuolumne meadows/Tioga pass) 395 to Mammoth. I drive at night to hit Yosemite at sunrise.

Reno would be ideal, but.......the desert from Vegas might be doable at night.

Edit- oops just saw your post Sac' to 395 would be best.

reno.... stay away from vegas or LAX

we just made the drive last week, but because of a 2 hour trip on a windy road that you can't get over 35mph on it is 7+ hr trip from vegas...........and at least the same amount of time from LAX

There is a private airport in Mammoth, maybe you could find someone who is flying in to mammoth when you come down, but everyone is right, if you fly commerical fly in to Reno.

haaaa. there is nothing but moutains on all four sides. Its like flying into Aspen, CO and the landing can get pretty rough... you, your luggage, and your plane bouncing all over.

BTW, if you are flying Delta (skymiles), SF would be the best choice for your wife & kids. There is plenty to see and SF is a better town to sightsee, etc as opposed to LA where everything is like 30 miles apart, meaning that you'll end up cussing and screaming at the traffic the whole way, but that is up to you. You can do so much in the bay area as opposed to LA, which tends to be a real pain in the ass to go there due to the size of the airport and the highways really need a good plumbing work using the toliet plunger...

It takes a good 5 hour drive to Mammoth by taking hwy 5 up to 395 through boredomville and windyville up to Mammoth if you are going to LA. I'm not sure about SF, it seems like that it will be about the same to drive to SF, but its sure more interesting than seeing a bunch of shrubs bouncing around and an occasional cactus here and there and some abandoned gas stations from LA.

Sweet- So Reno is the best place to fly to. What about shipping out the bike?

$75 each way probably, get a big box and make it hard to get into so its less likely to get trashed by security. Get there early, pretty much everytime I have flown with a bike we have had some sort of trouble "we MAY not be able to get it on the plane but we can probably get it to you in the next few days" "great, I start riding tomorrow, but we MAY be able to start a little late."

It kind of sucks flying with a bike but usually it ends up fine.

I know about the $75 stuff. Doesn't delta offer free shipping once or twice a year for NORBA racers? I used to get that crap in the mail like once a month.

I thouhgt about sending it ups or fed ex too. Ship it right to the hotel or something. I may send it to Sully and have him tune it and then ship it back home.

The last lengthy bike trip I took, I shipped my bikes. You can get more of your tools/parts there easier as well. I don't remember if delta is on the IMBA list but it shouldn't be hard to find out. Let me know if you need to find someone to ship to, I've got a few friends down there.
