Hi
I would like to get a road bike soon for fitness but I'm not sure how strong these bikes are I'm currently 270lbs(down from310) will a road bike be ok for me because at the moment I'm riding a 40 mile round trip every day to work on a 37lbs freeride bike with 8 inches of travel at each end so it not much fun.
I have a limited buget of around $650 and looking at a Giant OCR3

or a Daws Giro400 http://www.dawescycles.com/dawes/giro-400.htm

I think your weight will be a much bigger factor for wheels and whatever mass produced bike you buy for $600, you'll probably have to replace the wheels sooner than later... so in the next year, plan to spend an additional $250 on something like Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Ultegra hubs.

I suggest you look into specific touring or commuting bikes. You can make them work as a road bike for weekend fun, but they're more designed to carry weight.

Congrats on the weight loss!

I would also recommend a hardtail. It will be sturdy, stronger braking, and with slicks, you can roll like a road bike.

During the wet weather, I did this, and it can be quite fun.
