So, I have a little Subie Impreza wagon with a 1.25" hitch and a Sportworks with the fat tire hoops. Seems to sway a little with heavy bikes on it, and I don't want the thing to start cracking on me.

Looks like there's a welder in my area who can convert my hitch to 2" for $85, and I have a friend who'll buy my current sportworks...thus I could buy the (very fvcking expensive) sportworks DH rack. Anyone use this one? Any reason I shouldn't do this??

Mike, I'm gald to hear you are doing it, getting rid of the bike rack and buying the Girlfriend some bolt-ons is a wise choice.

But what if the rack is stable and the little Subie Impreza wagon seems to sway a little?
Then I can get you to ride shotgun as an anti-sway device...

Well, you're a fan of prosthetics in general, no?

MikeD-

Just have the welder wled the hitch to the frame of the car and then weld the rack into the hicth. I did this with my last car (cavalier) and it never failed.

of course you cant remove anything after you do this.

You could have the welder seal the gaps in the trays. this is probably where the swaying is coming from. I did this to my hollywood rack and it took a lot of the problems away.

Go for drive on some back roads with bike on the rack. Wiggle the car back and forth. If it looks like the rack is pivoting from the main pivot weld that up. of course by doing this you wont be able to fold the rack up. this is not necessarily bad. I leave my rack down permanent. It helps prevent peeps from tailgaiting me. Rack vs. radiator. I win.

I did all of my own work on my rack.

(I'm gonna get soooo much flak for that line)

hhahaah, me too.

I have a few frinds with the Sportworks DH. They love them. I swear by the bed of my 1500 Quad Cab.
