Zombie thread update!
now that bikes fly for $50, it is worth it for me to go to Mexico with my bike, so I picked up a Dakine roller bag. It seems really nice, anyone have one that might have any user tips?
I've got that bag and its awesome. My 27.5 x 2.35 Magic Mary was a bit squishy to get into the wheel pocket fully inflated, but then a 29er wheel fit just fine? The bag also rolls into a relatively small shape which makes it easy to stash at your destination.

Just don't let your stupid Shepard puppy chew the handle off.....

the linear inches and weight is what kills you every time...
I'm heading to Europe in May for riding. The bike transport is costing me about $500 AUD on top of the normal plane ticket. When I go to Whistler, I've never had to pay a cent extra.

I've flown numerous airlines now that don't really care. You basically check it as a bike bag, they know it's a bike, charge you $25-$50 and you just take it to oversize luggage. I haven't been sweated at all over the size. I'm sure there's some airlines that do. I've had friends get absolutely bent over at certain airlines and end up paying more than their ticket cost for their bike and when you're ready to get on a plane, you're basically held hostage and forced to pay. But if you do your research, numerous airlines are fairly chill and reasonable. Every time I've flown with the EVOC, it's been pretty painless.

can you name the good (and bad) airlines? I feel like that information is possibly more important than which bike bag one uses...

(though I still have my EVOC, which gets used about once every year and a half... and I still like it. Bike survived my trip to Ecuador in Nov '18 without breaking a sweat. There was two transfers in each direction too)

Air Canada’s fee is $50 with a 70lb weight limit. Details here: https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/plan/baggage/special-items.html

Can you post a report? I'm considering it next year.
Best riding buddy, soon to be office companion and friend of mine did it the last 2 years - he won the 40+ cat both times. He is totally raving about it, the variety, the build quality of the trails, the routing, the landscape, the organizers, the friend's he made during the race, the food...
Will try to get some pics and post them here.
You'll be having a good time @toodles

I know the trails. I love them but it's great to hear the organizers are awesome too. Do they have something in common with the Freeride Madeira crew? After spending 2 days with them a few years ago I can't wait to go back. The whole island is awesome.

Yeah Freeride seems to be heavily involved with the logistics and whatnot, so I assume they may even be the same crew.

If anyone wants an entry let me know - one of our crew had to have a knee reconstruction and the surgeon reckons the recovery window isn't going to be sufficient to be ready in time for the end of May. The organisers can just transfer the entry is anyone wants to buy it.

Except this guy. I don't need more people faster than me in the 40+ cat.

They're teasing the entry list at the moment. Looks like Ratboy and maybe Peaty, and potentially Fairclough. I think I'll be happy with a midpack result hahha.

I personally have had good luck with Westjet (has been $25CAD on some flights so less than $25 USD before), Air Canada (which I believe per their policy is $50, still good IMO) and Alaska (has varied, but usually around $50). I believe Delta has changed their policy and is now $50. I can't remember what the linear inches is on the EVOC, but personally I find most airlines don't care or measure. You tell them it's a bike, pay whatever fee they have when they check it in and then take it to oversized baggage. I have found that sometimes if you do the whole pre-check in thing online where you can pay for checked bags, it's even easier. Then you know what the cost is, literally print the tag when you get to the airport, slap it on there and drop off your bike at oversized.

From Website:

Bicycles

Bicycles, non-motorized touring or single seat racing, are allowed as checked baggage on most flights, with the exception of certain Delta Connection® carriers.

  • Standard baggage allowance and fees based on cabin and travel region apply
  • Bicycles weighing over 50 lbs. will be charged the applicable excess weight fee
  • If the outside linear dimensions (length + width + height) exceed 115 linear inches (292 cm) or exceeds 100 lbs, the item will not be accepted
  • Items in excess of baggage allowance will be subject to additional or overweight baggage fees
  • A limited liability release form must be signed by the passenger in the case that the bike is not properly packed
  • If the bicycle is packaged in a hard shell case specifically designed for transporting bicycles, then a limited release form is not required
  • If the bicycle is packaged in a soft sided travel bag or anything other than a hard shell case, a limited release form will need to be signed

You actually aren't allowed to take them on most flights hey. They have to be shipped. Fuck paying excess baggage fees on one anyway.
I saw that one of the bike shops in Whistler is now renting batteries only. So you can leave yours at home, fly with your bike and then rent a battery from them.

I'm pretty sure they're going to race in Men (elite) cat again. They have done it before (and were great blokes to ride with, talk to and have a beer with according to my friend).

Are they doing Drug test on chilled races like this? I'm 100% sure what my shrink gives me is banned since I can't even travel with it without a special paper

Never been tested at any of the races I've been to. Given half the field at Trans BC was stoned, and Trans Cascadia includes a joint and beer in your entry pack, I don't think they're very serious. They're not UCI events anyway.

Actually, Megan Rose (who runs Trans NZ and BC) is a deadest legend and allround great person. She makes sure there's enough beer going around at the end of every day to keep everyone happy and even stocked the fridges in the hotel rooms in BC.

Ironically I was once disqualified at Polish national championships because I went to check my Quali Time with a beer in hand and a national cycling body official saw me.

Though I think riding while stoned and drunk should give you a bonus not a DC. It's harder. The thing is my prescribed drug is not weed but amphetamines

A buddy got a 6 month suspension from C grade DH for racing with a couple of lunchtime beers in him. At the last race of the year so he didn't miss a single race anyway. Great work.

Yeah given the Trans races aren't cycling federation or UCI affiliated or controlled I reckon you could race on anything you wanted. There's never been drug testing at one AFAIK.

I've done Trans Cascadia a couple times. Most days, half the field was still drunk from the night before.
