for my high school welding class, i m thinking of building aa hardtail mtb frame. i was curious as to whether there were some websites up that had any information about geometry/measurements, frame construction, and the like. any help would be appreciated as would any frame building pointers. also, does anybody know where i can order brake bosses, dropouts, bb shells etc.? i was thinking of getting some dropouts machined but i dunno if it would be cheaper to order some although i do have a machinist friend.

thanks.

check eastons site about tubeing. i did a search on google and got some info a while back. its not that helpful thought but worth the read. i beliv then said weld the seat tube first to the bb and the down tube to the head tube. but after that i donno.
my guess
1.seat tube to bb
2.down tube to head tube
3.top tube to head tube
4. TT DT and HT to BB and ST
5. chain stay to bb
6. steat stay from chain stay to seat tube.
7. then a whole lot of bending and aligning.

i was bored so i made that up i don't know if its true but thats the way i would do it
setting up the jigs will be the hardest part especially with a class period.

good luck with you one og a kind frame!

for drop outs use a drill press and a band saw to cat a basic drop out and if i remember correctly you may need cold roled steel (the good stuff)

Has lots of links for beginner framebuilders. The best place to get drops is probably from henry james (link from page above)
You can order all the cable stops and BB from there as well.

If you want really burly SS drops you will probably have to cut them yourself. This is not hard to do with a hacksaw and some files.

For tubing, either order butted stuff from henry james or get cheap straight gauge cro-mo from aircraft spruce

http://www.aircraft-spruce.com/

or from wicks

http://www.wicksaircraft.com/

Both have good prices, service and selection but they carry different sizes.

You can email me with specific questions if you want
Good luck

I was assuming you were building a steel bike. Don't even try alum, especially for your first frame. Steel bikes are hard enough without having to deal with material that doesn't like to be welded and has to be heat treated. Alot of awesome hardtails are steel.

Not to bash on you but that is just about the opposite of the preferred method. Lots of people have their orders but there is some consensus.

I have seen several good web pages from people who built their own bikes without jigs. I will try and dig them up.
