I was told by Mavic that black 721s and 729s would start shipping the end of this month/ beginning of the new year. I'm waiting on a pair of 36 hole 721s.

y buy those if you could buy 823's?
not everyone wants tubeless....

I also prefer the wider rim for the shape it gives the tire.. specifically maxxis 2.35/2.5 and michy 2.5 tires

I'm not sure how the newer 823's are but the older ones didn't hold up very well... I think I remember the newer ones being improved... I haven't tried them

true, but the new 823s are actually really strong....i think partly because the shape mocks the 521.....the old ones were trash tho
Ya, but that perception is still there. I also know of many shops who still have the older models in stock. Up here, 823s cost ALOT more as well, not sure if that is the case in the US though.

Down here they are cheaper than the 729(or whatever the burlier one is). I really dig mine.

Yes they are strong, but 721's are no where near as strong as 823's and especially 729's.

How do the Sun single tracs compare to a 729?
I have found that Sun rims are softer than Mavics. If you are a big guy or just a hard rider I doubt the Single Tracks will hold up to you. As is my rear Single Track has a fairly good sized ding and a flatspot after about 5 rides. I have had a 729 on the rear of my Bullit for 2 or so years now and after many times downhilling and aggressive riding it is still true and dent free.

Ok, I'll bite ... what color did they paint it, and what color was it supposed to be painted?

They painted mine RED and it was suppose to be Intense orange. They ended up painting someone elses old 02 Fly orange and my 06 red.

My LBS is Go-Ride and I live about 800 miles from them.

Those black 729's do look nice. I remember seeing pictures of them on VP Frees a couple of years ago but never actually saw a black 729 in person.

Now, about 521's/721's. I have a pair that have almost two years of hard riding by a big Clyde, that's me. They have not gotten one flat spot and have never gone out of true. I believe a lot has to do with the quality of the wheel build but I have never had rims hold up as well. My D321's(Same as current 729's) have not heald up nearly as well. They are still awesome rims but they do have dents, flatspots and my rear has a nice little hop to it. So, I'm pretty stoked on D521's/721's.

I have had the black ex721's for a few months now. IMO they look better then the grey and are cheaper as well.

I have run both 729 (321) and 721 (521) on my DH bike and the 721's are a far better rim, better strength to weight ratio, and better tire profile as well.
