Cannodale Unveiling its new Black Lightning Road Bike at Giro d'Italia

Cannondale is unveiling an all-new version of its classic Black Lightning road racing bike here at the Giro d’Italia today. Mario Cipollini of the Saeco/Cannondale racing team will mark the occasion by competing aboard the “striking” bicycle in today’s 198 km stage from Lido di Jesolo to Lubijana, and his Saeco/Cannondale teammates will wear special Black Lightning-inspired uniforms.

The Black Lightning features a beautiful jet black CAAD6 frame with gold decals. The frame is outfitted with black anodized Campy Record components with gold highlights, a black Cannondale carbon fiber Slice Si fork, and a gold Cannondale Hollowgram crankset.

Cipollini is happy to assist Cannondale with the re-issue of the Black Lightning. “This is a stunning bicycle,” said Cipollini. “It is a celebration of elegance and speed, the incarnation of style and performance – much like myself. It is my pleasure to ride such a gorgeous bicycle.”

The re-issue of the Black Lightning is part of Cannondale’s observance of its 30th birthday. The company will produce just 99 additional Black Lightning units this fall, with each one individually numbered. The bicycle that Cipollini will ride today is number 1 of the limited-edition re-issue. Cannondale will also offer Saeco/Black Lightning uniforms, identical to those worn by the team in today’s stage, for sale beginning in June.

The original Black Lightning caused a sensation in the cycling industry when it debuted in 1986. “The introduction of the first Black Lightning was an important moment for us,” recalls Joe Montgomery, Cannondale’s Founder and President. “At the time, we were still a pretty small fish in a very large pond. The Black Lightning really showed what we were capable of, from both an innovation and a stylistic perspective, and it opened a lot of people’s eyes to Cannondale.”

Cannondale is pairing the re-issue of the Black Lightning with a limited run of a special-edition mountain bike. The new “Good Boy” is the aesthetic antithesis of the company’s popular Bad Boy “urban assault” vehicles. The Good Boy will have a polished silver frame and polished silver components, and it will come with two sets of wheels – a pair of 26” wheels with full knobby tires for off-road riding, and a pair of 700c road wheels for fast-paced pavement riding. Both sets of wheels will be compatible with the Good Boy’s disc brakes. The Good Boy will also feature a HeadShok Lefty ELO fork and a mixture of custom Shimano XT and XTR components. Both the Black Lightning and Good Boy will be available for a limited time this fall. Suggested retail prices were not announced.
