i ordered a ridgeback from px which is being shipped to the shop i work at. unfortunately i hadn't seen the jamaican paint job when i ordered, and now that i've seen it i HATE IT! i don't have time to send it back or to sell it since i need it for a trip next weekend. so the question is, what do i do? i had originally wanted just the matte black finish, and i think i could do that with just spray paint, 6 coats and a couple coats or urethane or top of it. i'm also looking into having a local place either anodize it or powdercoat it, but i'm afraid that could get expensive real fast. looking for suggestions and ideas...

You have the right idea. Just mask off the BB/Headset/disc tabs/post mounts and spray away. Flat black won't be that hard to get to look right. 3-5 coats of paint should do it, then a similar amount of matte coat for a little added life. Just keep in mind a spray paint job will not last nearly as long as the factory PX one...

Yep. Aircraft paint stripper and some spraypaint or a powdercoat.

Personally, I'd buy truck-bed liner spray from Autozone and use a few coats of that.
Whatever you do, if you paint it yourself, go slow and allow lots of time between coats. Then again, it'll probably end up looking pretty ghetto-fabulous after 4 months anyhow.

new idea. first off, this is the paint:

i like most of it, except for the jamaican colors and a couple joints and leaves i've heard lurk around the frame. the rest of the graphics i like. any reason i couldn't carefully sand off the decals (they're under the clear) and then polyurethane over those spots?

BANCHE here on RM had a friend spray bed liner on his MountainCycle and it's pretty awesome. The look is nice and of course it's durable.

I just bought a PX used b/c all they had left was the Jamaican. I couldn't deal with that color scheme either.

I've got that exact same paint job on my PX Pitbull - and I f***ing hate it also - I tried using a gigantic permanent marker which worked better than you would expect - but still kind of ghetto - I love the bike, but don't understand the need to put some lame *ss rasta crap on it - I have taken frames in the past to a place here in Denver that sells (and powdercoats) bumpers for cars - they had several colors in stock and only charged me $65 bucks to do powdercoat it.

PC on a hardtail should be fairly cheap. Its FS bikes with multi parts and sensitive bearing areas that cost alot. Use the net to look up a local PC guy. If the look matters that much then Im sure in the end its worth the time. Rattle can jobs are ok, but after a while they get real haggared. I know... ive done a few decent rattle jobs that turn to crap after a few months of real use.

In a real pinch you'd be supprised how well a roll of black electrical tape can cover up lame graphics.......

If the rest of the paint is matt black just buy a can of matt black paint, roughten up the clear and spray over the stickers. It will proberly match well enough and tough black spray paint is usually a lot easier to get hold of than other colours. If it wears off it doen't take long to spray it again.

what's the deal with bike companys/bike part companys and their rasta fetish. It really makes no sense. Rastas don't buy expensive bikes, I don't even know any rastas that ride in the first place. It must be the association with marijuana.
