its a ghetto mod - my machine shop consists of a cordless drill. i drew the hole pattern in cad then printed it out & center punched it onto the ring.

Im really glad I found this forum. I have been completely obsessed with BMW for almost a decade and it is comforting to know that there are others like me. Im about to buy a Racelink. I need some advice. Im thinking of putting a single-crown fork on it (first choice is the Fox 36, second Marz. 66). I realize this is a little crazy but here is my logic: I ride the shore and need something strong and that I can climb up on. The SC fork will shave a lot of weight and steepen up the angles to help me climb. I think the Brooklyn guys have some linkage to reduce the rear travel to 7 so there wouldnt be an inequity between front and rear. Id get a mini-link but Im 64 and the mini-link would be a bit small for trail riding. The other unorthodox thing Im thinking of doing with the Racelink is putting a Rolhof (sp?) hub on it. This will sure make for a heavy rear-end in relation to my SC up front. What do you guys think of these ideas?
the 7" 66 would be a fine match - actually there's a pic of doc's rl with one a couple pages back. though its not a super light fork at about 7lbs. i think running a shorter travel fork & reducing the rl's travel kinda defeats its purpose. its going to be really heavy for a mid-travel bike, and if climbing ability & lightness are important factors, there are probably better suited frames out there. the shore is mostly shuttleable, anyways - though i do ride my tmx up fromme - its not that bad for what it is. i'd say buy the frame & leave it alone; throw on a light 7-8" fork and sacrifice a bit of climbing efficiency; the downhill performance of that bike will more than make up for the effort going up.
regarding the rohloff - it uses a qr axle, so would be incompatible with the standard 12mm through-axle used on the rl. i suppose a kickass machinist might be able to engineer & fabricate some sort of axle / dropout solution, but i'm sure that'd involve lots of $$.
anyways. sorry for the naysaying (just IMHO) - buy that rl!

I sounds a litte bit strange when you're talking about climbing, and trailriding-ability on a racelink. It sure is an efficient pedaler, but its really heavy, and got a long-ish wheelbase. The 170mm 66 has 585mm / 22" axel to crown length. That's loooong. To compare, the 888 200mm. is only 5mm. / 0,2" longer! (RL has wheelbase of 1180mm / 46,5" with this setup).llaskin said:

I just want the option of going on some of the longer epic rides around B.C., that cant be shuttled, and still attempt the odd big drop without snapping a frame ever month (I went through 8 RM9 frames in a year once, until they stopped warranting me). Having never even seen a Racelink in person I just want to know if this is even feasible. Obviously I would have to build it up pretty light (ti bb spindle, narrower tires, etc) if I was to even consider climbing any distance.

Not to be a downer, but I think your project is going to end up being far more painful than it's worth.llaskin said:
The 36 is intended as an aggressive trailbike fork; I don't think anyone rode it in the Rampage, but if they did, they must have been smooooooth... Especially under your weight, I would avoid it.
I understand the desire to own a Brooklyn, but don't sacrifice functionality for the sake of owning something botique. The Racelink is not a trail bike. To ride it as one would mean a lot of comprimise.
You'll end up with a heavy, long, slack bike that will be an exercise in pain to pedal up a hill.
What you should do, of course, is to buy the Racelink, build it up as a DH bike, and buy a trailbike for your non-DH purposes
Here are some pix of my race link. I have tried it as a trail bike with a 66, lighter wheels (outlaws), single-ply Minions, a smaller chain ring, and jacked-up compression dampening. Not perfect as it is long - but fun none the less.
