It's only all about style. That's all it is. It's funny, when 26 just started coming in a few years back, people were thinking all man, now dudes are going to go BIG. And in reality, no, nobodies really going any bigger. People thought, ohhh, bigger wheel, bigger jumps. No, that's not the case. It's still only a damn bicycle, everybody's still rollin at roughly the same speed. It's just the style and look you prefer, it's not really a big **cking deal. Tricks can be done on any wheel size, 16 to 29 inch, doesn't matter. Its how its pulled off. If you like the dudes on 29 inch fixies riding walls then thats your style, if you like dudes doin 1440's at the park, then thats your's. I've seen style and dead sailors on all setups. Maybe it comes down to who has the best looking dead sailor, you're only as strong as your weakest player.

I haven't seen that with riders. . . . .
There are lots of them all over the place. Have you ever been on Pinkbike?

But what I do see is older/experienced 20" bmx riders hating on or closing their mind to 26" mtbmx.
I haven't really seen this. Everywhere I have gone and every bmxer that I have ever rode with on my 2six has been cool with it. Most say something about the bike and want to try it. Even when I'm just riding my 20, I don't really hear people hating on 2sixes.

One other thing I was thinking about is that trail riding/dirt jumping is basically dead in mainstream bmx. I think there is just as much, if not more, coming from the 2six dj scene. Not that I really care how popular it is, but being more popular creates mores spots, more people to ride with, and more videos to watch. I just wish we would see more trail videos with all kinds of bikes riding together, instead of just 20s or 26s.

Most of the discrimination I've seen has been 20 riding dirt jumpers thinking mountain bikers will ruin their jumps, or that mtbers build crappy jumps. That perception has changed rapidly though, and pretty much everyone is cool with whatever now.
At least in my area....

I won't waste anyones time on my view of mtb & bmx since everyone covered most points. But to Cru...

I wouldn't say that trails are dead in mainstream bmx, just doesn't have the momentum that street/ park does at the moment. I know the xgaymes dropped it but I don't consider xgaymes to be the bmx culture. We're just seeing bmx going throught it's cycles and trails will gain momentum once again. But still I see trails being shot in a good amount of current web vids and dvds.

not everyone likes a rock garden with 8' lips. actually nobody does
Heh.......I do.

I love that shlt.

Make it awkward and it becomes a lot more interesting to put together. :D

Then again I like all the big mountain desert riding stuff too. It really never crosses my mind what someone's doing on a 20" in a skatepark when I see someone on 26s spin a three of some weird ass run in onto a loose awkward landing.

Yeah, maybe not dead, but not nearly as big as street. The Come Up is killing bmx...

glad you've got a cool scene. i basically agree with you that it is good for groms--whether mtb or bmx--to know the roots and to know what's going down in the present. but as for people being uninformed. . . . i would still argue that bmx'ers don't know (and don't care) about mtbmx. (i was a bmx'er and i didn't care either about mtb before i did it). they don't see the difference between an xc bike, a DH bike and a DJ bike, and have never even heard of 4x racing, they think that suspension would mess up jumping (even though they've never tried it), think that people only switch to mtb to make money at contests or get sponsored, think that bmx companies are selling out by making mtb's (like Eastern or DK) but think it's cool that FBM and Volume make fixies, think that pump tracks are just stupid rip-offs of bmx (until they ride one and have fun), etc. etc. etc.

anyway i don't want to be negative. i still love bicycle motocross of all wheel sizes. and i completely agree with you i'd like to see some videos mix it up. i think that would be educational for BOTH sides.

Yeah, I see your point. But, I don't think it is that big of a deal. I mean, any closed mindedness is silly, but in all fairness, most bmxers aren't trying to do any mountain biking. Maybe they should, but if they don't, then why should they care about it? To me, it's worse when mountain bikers are actually doing bmx riding, even though it might be on a bigger bike, but don't respect bmx.

Oh, and pump tracks ARE lame. And, no, I have never ridden one. Haha.

Yea The Come Up is awful in many areas and brewing dumb ass kids. Those kids are becoming more and more ignorant. I admit I visit it daily cuz Adam is deep rooted in the industry and has all the latest info on bmx and web edits. A good amount of pros visit the site as well for q&a which I like. But for the most part it's a stink hole for the bmx culture.

You could look at it that way, but it's a tough call.
I'm reminded of: "Does art reflect culture, or does culture affect art?"
I tend to think that the kids are just more ignorant due to a lack of education. Too much TV and not enough books read. And a society that encourages greed and selfishness, while reducing opportunity. The Come Up, and other sites simply reflect this trend.

That might be part of it. But, Adam definitely promotes street riding more than anything else on there because that's the only thing he rides. He also talks sh!t on a lot of cool stuff. That site is so big now that it definitely influences the overall culture of bmx. Imagine how much different that site would be if he was a cool trail rider.

As much as I hate it I can agree. I'm not into art and not culturally savvy so I don't see the complete connection. But the kids, this is a blanket statement, are lacking anything with substance and are bored. So The Come Up is like Disneyland on the net. They have all the latest cool info, porn and the ability to use profanity. Any 13yr old boy will find that very attractive and thats Adam's ace card. Arm some kids with those tools and you get the stink hole I spoke of. I can't see the art but I do see the counter culture.

The only point I was making with the art comment, was that arguments are made whether what we see makes us what we are, or what we are makes what we see. I think you are right on with the above comments too.

Some days I will go to the park and ride my 20" before the kiddies get there, then I will go push my dh bike up the local mountain before lunch, and after dinner go for some trail riding on my 250 and blast some berms. Claiming blind allegiance to one type of riding is like saying I "only date blondes" despite the fact that the brunnete across the street could be double jointed. Variety is the spice of life, if you don't believe that then you should run down to the clinic for a snip snip.

Haha. True that. I built one last year because people said they were fun - right...

I don't really understand why there is a rivalry(?) between bmx and mtb. Both have there advantages and disadvantages. I ride both. I prefer my mountain bike on the dirt jumps, and my bmx in the park. I think that's how it should be really. I think 26'' look goofy riding in the parks and/or streets. But to each his own. I'm not going to hate on anyone for riding a mtb or a bmx.
Riding is riding.

Ride to live, live to ride tomorrow. That's just how it is.

that is true. 3ing a 35ft drop is effin mental, hands down.

i think that the mtb industry needs to push more flowy style riding and stuff, over just huge hucks. crankworx has a lot of potential for sure. they just should have held it on the elevation course. woulda been hella sicker for sure.

Some of the hucks people do on 20s rival almost anything done on MTB, just for the pure WTFness of it all.
12'+ to FLAT, (concrete) hopping over a rail? same gap to fakie? 360, gapping a 20 stair? Nutty stuff!
My point? It's all good, baby!

if it's stylish then by definition it doesn't look awkward.
i'm talking about guys who look natural and flowy in their movements, but the huge wheels under them look awkward. for example, i saw guy marsh and billy lewis riding 20s at my skatepark and they looked really sick. but when you watch a video of them at a park on their mtb, it looks goofy. (although the 24" fall guys look alright). watch adam hauck at the ray's comp. perfect illustration of good style ruined by an awkwardly big bike.

I think what makes Hauck look goofy in this vid is his bike set up. when you run really narrow bars over the top of those big hola hoop wheels it looks goofy. Wider bars and his set up would match his riding a lot better. Just like back in the late 90's when dudes where running narrow bars on 20's with grips down past the bends. But you know what, if that's the style the rider likes and feels good with, then let it roll. It's kind of wild how your mind works and knows whats appealing to you as and individual.

IMO, BMXers like Jackson Allen build the best pump tracks:

hell, do your thing, have fun with your buddies, its all that matters. Come ride our jumps on whatever you want as long as you dont butcher it and you dig

Hauck's riding is dope and that vid was sick. I'm just surprised this thread has gone this long with pretty much everyone agreed and pretty much everyone riding 20s & big wheels.

Well, this is a mountain biking forum, so that helps. Try starting this thread over on The Come Up!!

FWIW, I'm not a big fan of Hauck's style either. He kills the park and has tons of tricks, but in my opinion, I just don't think he has much style.... especially on trails. I don't think it has anything to do with the bike, though.

Edit: Not trying to hate. But, in fairness, I think we have to hold mtbs to the same standards as bmx. People would say the same thing if he was on a bmx.

Maybe he's going for a style-less style?
Maybe no-style is the new steez?:biggrin:

Mike Montgomery was OWNING everyone at Crankworx Colorado in practice until he broke his arm. Made every top pro his absolute bitch...even had Greg Watts saying holy sh!t. Dude is a friggin monster. Check his park run out, and notice his barhop at 1:53.... He threw that barhop out of the-step up to cereal bowl to step-down here in Colorado... He's proof that some mtb guys can hang with the bmx guys in park.
