This is a X-thread, but is it possible to get BMX axles in lengths that would allow me to convert my rear QR hub to bolt on? Am I incorrect in thinking that I could take a super long 3/8" BMX axle and completely overhaul the hub to fit the axle?
I did it, but a mtb axle is 9mm (trying to remember, 99% sure that was it) with a different thread-pitch than bmx.
I put a solid axle in a r XT disc hub for my M-1. BIG improvement in stifness. Not sure if you can get the axles in hardened steel. Do you want pegs or something?
Yes it can be done quite easily. Most quick release (hollow) rear axles are 10 x 1. Wheels Manufacturing makes solid Cr-Mo 10 x 1 axles in a variety of lengths that will do the job. All you need to change is the axle as all the cones and locknuts will be the same thread. I used one on my Bullit in an XT rear hub.
With the help of some fellow monkeys, I recently did this conversion to a front XT disc hub. Pretty painless operation.
XT hubsets are going cheap on eBay. I've seen sets sell for $40. The BMX axles are usually only a couple of bucks, I think I spent $7 on mine, plus some odd change for the nuts. I recommend wave washers to help avoid loosening of the nuts from vibration. Better yet, get nylon locking nuts if you can (my local hardware store did not have them).
I found the Wheels Manufacturing site, but now I need to figure out what kind of axle I need. I run an Edco rear hub, so I assume it would fall into the "cheap Taiwanese-made" category? Also, for anyone that's bought from WM before (speedbump, I'm lookin at you) how much are they and do I have to order direct?

I work at a shop and we usually get their stuff through another distributor such as QBP, BTI, or J & B. If you're not in the industry, any of your usual retail channels should be able to get it for you. As for price, the axle is probably $7 to $10.
does your EdCo hub have cartridge bearings? The 10x1 wheels manufacturing axle will only really work with loose ball type hubs. The axle wouldn't have any sort of collar for the cartridge bearings to sit on.
