This is an unmitigated public relations disaster for them. People are quitting their organization (or this one), their FB page is filled with thousands of irate former supporters (or just irate posters), groups are disassociating with them, and politicians are publicly backing away from supporting them. I can't *fathom* how this is going to end well for them, or that the anti-abortion supporters are going to be able to make up amounts lost by the pro-choice people who are leaving SGK and their activities in droves. It reminds me of the GM "cyclist" ad that caught fire, spread throughout the internet and led to GM issuing an apology and pulling any further advertising.

Stinkle, while I respect your right to poke and be the thorn, have you experienced breast cancer in your life in any way? If you have, please tell me you talked to the doctors and other professionals who will tell you that SGK, Avon, and basically any pink ribbon organization can't do squat about curing cancer. Many besides me feel that big pharma does not want a cure, so professionals will tell you that screenings are the best hope for a "cure". Want to help with the SGK Race for the Cure? Even to volunteer as a cancer survivor and family member (family members are considered survivors too) it cost you $90. To volunteer! SO if that money can make sure someone who can't afford insurance or to pay for a screening, great. To pay the salary of a Republican governor candidate endorsed by Sarah Palin...not so much. Forget the politics, focus on helping fight the disease.

Thank you for the reminder that it's not just political banter but also about lives and monetary research towards a cure hangs in the balance. I don't agree with Komen's financials and the (little) amount of money that goes specifically towards cancer research, but the fact that they *were* donating money and working towards a cure should not be forgotten. (And tried to +rep, but must spread some around first)

Quoted for awesome-osity. My Mum died from breast, lung and brain cancer. I have tried to support Komen as I can, beleiving in them and trusting in their intent. I am saddened and disheartened by the mixing of politics and charity towards a cause that effects all economic strata. Piss on politics...

Thanks for the nice comments. My wife was screened every year mainly because I'm fortunate to have good insurance. Hers was caught in time and as of now, she is cancer free. However, it was a radical decision to undergo a double mastectomy, mainly because of hospitals want to do seperate procedures so they can charge twice for surgical suite, xrays, nurses, etc. (Not kidding, was told this by the John Hopkins surgeon). Screenings are the only way to fight the disease right now. Early detection saves lives. If the money comes from a church, a biker gang or a pink ribbon cause, I don't care.

While the immediate apology and reversal was probably the best way to try to contain the controversy, they've done some long-lasting damage to the brand with this, *and* they've pissed off the right-wing anti-abortion groups that were trying to be supportive over the last 48h. So massive loss of donors/volunteers from the people who are so turned off by their recent actions, and they won't even have the backstop of increased donors from the wingnuts. Best case scenario is they lie low for awhile and hope it all blows over, but it's going to be a rough couple years.

They are. It's a rich women's social club that allows large corporate sponsors to pretend they care about women in a way that keeps them nicely separated from inconvenient issues of abortion or sexual promiscuity which are, of course, central to women's health for anyone pre-menopause. Sh!t, even other post-menopause illnesses don't get the same attention because everyone knows pussies are gross - I don't see no brightly colored NFL helmet straps for cervical cancer, do you? But everyone loves titties, so it's a convenient way to raise money for whogivesafvckwegavemoneysowecanfeelgood.
There has been little to no progress towards improved cancer screening or treatment, let alone cure, despite billions of dollars in charity and billions more in pink merchandise. We do a sh!tload more screenings and a sh!tload more biopsies and a sh!tload more chemo sessions, but apparently more women are dying of breast cancer than ever. Probably a good time to examine our research strategies and perhaps fund more innovative and efficient charities?
edit: to be clear. horrible disease and we should keep funding the fight, keep funding screenings, but maybe re-examine whether behemoths like Komen that have evolved so far from their cause and into a big merchandising social club are the right avenue to detection, treatment and cure.

while i support termination for danger to a woman's life, abortion-on-demand is no different than capricious extermination, b/c that's the precise definition. how actually caring is it that when pre-natal testing suggests a special needs child (*very* broadly defined, btw), termination is the suggested course of action? if that isn't cleansing the gene pool, then that phrase has no useful meaning.
if they truly care for women's health, why do they resist measures to provide an informed decision as to how best proceed (for the pregnant woman, not PP or its proxies)? why have the last few years been fraught w/ legislative & judicial actions used to "coerce" PP into providing more access to scientific breakthroughs, that can only be beneficial to women? you know, that silly thing categorically eschewed by fundies?

Uh, you do know that "cancer screenings" are part of a woman's annual "girlie checkup" where they do tests for STDs (including HPV which causes cervical cancer) as well as a visual inspection of the cervix for any type of malignant growth, right? "Cancer screening" is a function that PP performs every single day of the year.
As far as your little propaganda video, do you know the difference between a breast exam and a mammogram? The first is a non-mechanical inspection of the breast for abnormal (possibly pre-cancerous) lumps, and is done 170,000x per year by Planned Parenthood. This is usually done to women in their 20s and 30s, *before* their annual mammograms that start up between the ages of 40-45. When a suspicious lump is found, the patient is given a mammogram to determine whether the lump is cancerous or not. While some Planned Parenthood's *do* do mammograms, quite often PP will write the referral to an outside health agency to do it. To claim that PP doesn't do any "cancer screenings" is not only incorrect but laughably so.
