Between a rock and a hard place.
Just finished "Between a rock and a hard place." by Aron Ralston.

He's the kid that amputated his own arm in the slot canyons outside of Moab.

Amazing story. Still undecided as to my impression of the kid.

On a lighter note check out the books of Christopher Moore.
Fluke
Bloodsucking Feinds
Practical Demonkeeping
Lamb
The Lust lizard of melancholoy cove
Island of the sequined love nun
coyote blue
The stupidest angel (the most recent)

Insanely funny stuff

I wish I could read. I have no patience. I get all consumed, just like I do with puzzles. A little is never enough. I do like Kinky Friedman stuff though.

I read about a book a week so I read all kinds of different stuff. The last one that I thought was pretty cool was "Shadow Divers" about the German Sub some divers found off the east coast that no one knew was there....made it pretty close to the US undetected!

Read "Notes of a Dirty Old Man" or "The Prettiest Girl in Town" by Charles Bukowski if you want a laugh and a boner.

He has an interesting style of writing.

decent books i have read in the last few months:

ian mcewan, "the child in time" - weird but thoroughly decent
W. Somerset Maugham, "The Razor's Edge" - i liked it, interesting characters. set in the early 20th century.
Dao Strom, "Grass Roof, Tin Roof" - about the vietnamese experience. too fluffy for my tastes, but well done
Tom Wolfe, "A Man In Full" - awesome. i dig tom wolfe, and this book was rich, in setting, characters and general interest
alfred bester, "the demolished man" - very early sci-fi, of a murder. good read

books i didn't finish since they seemed lame after the first few (dozen) pages:

D.H. Lawrence, "Women in Love"
Wilbur Smith, "Monsoon"
Gene Wolfe, "The Book of the New Sun" (shadow and claw)

what i'm currently reading is john wheeler's "geons, black holes, and quantum foam", which is an autobiography. wheeler was a theoretical physicist involved with the atomic and hydrogen bomb projects among many other things.

That's hot ;)

Toshi, nice stuff in your set too.

I'm reading John Graves' "From a Limestone Ledge." Just finished J. Frank Dobie's "On the Open Range."

I'm going back for more Dobie next week. My academic inbreeding is not yet complete.

_the child in time_ was the 1st mcewan i read. it really hit home, being a parent. i agree, it did take an odd turn. read _atonement_. it's awesome. i've read _the innocent_ and _amsterdam_ too, liked the 1st better. just started _enduring love_ but haven't made much headway.

I much prefer the "Prarie Home Companion" dude.
Garrison Keillor hosts that. Good show; the guy has a great radio voice.

This American Life is not Sedaris' show; Ira Glass hosts it. Sedaris sometimes contributes essays and stories. I read Me Talk Pretty One Day and some of his other stuff. Really funny, very well written. Also, his sister was on one of my favorite TV shows, Strangers with Candy. If you like Sedaris, you might also want to check out Sarah Vowell. She does similar stuff and is also a regular NPR contributor. Another good one is Umberto Eco. I read a book by him last year, How To Travel With a Salmon, I think. Good stuff.

Just started "The Gunslinger". Seems the whole Dark Tower series is being fluffed left and right, so I'll give it a shot.
I read The Gunslinger a few years back. Seems to me it was the best one in the series for a variety of reasons. The others are worth doing, though. I read part of Wizard and Glass like 3 years ago and decided to finish it this summer. I went on and read the next 2 as well. Now, I just have to find time to read the last one.

Anyone read anything by Tom Perrotta? Not particularly serious reading but it flies by and is certainly enjoyable. His most famous book is Election, which was made into a (not particularly good) movie.

I'm not doing any non-academic reading right now but I have been enjoying some of the stuff I've done for school. Read The Peloponnesian War and enjoyed that. Also read a lot of Emerson earlier this semester, which was fun.

by coincidence i was reading _the innocent_ when i was in berlin, so that was pretty cool.

have you read _gravity's rainbow_? the writing style of pynchon is phenomenal, but it's not a book you can just plow through.

jrogers, _strangers w/ candy_ is so great. damn funny show. i got seasons 1&2 on dvd.
