The problem I encounter is when portaging is with low-riding packs. If I have a pack that has any material up high, like a traditional camelback, that pads my back/shoulders and it's easy to portage like that. If I'm using a hip pack or low-rider, there's nothing there and it's painful as hell. All of these appear to be for the first situation, which is where you don't really need much else IME.
