That's exactly why I said to Avy to stick with one of the major motor manufacturers.
Bafang are a big manufacturer of motors... But not a common OEM supplier for higher end Emtbs.
If you'd have bought the EP8 vitus and had issues even after Vitus went tits up you'd have been given a new motor/battery under warranty through any Shimano dealer (pretty much any decent bike shop)

the flip side is that in theory one could source Bafang parts from, say, ebikes.ca and rebuild the whole unit indefinitely +/- manufacturers using proprietary connectors. which in turn is not an issue if you replace everything wholesale later or rewire.

I wouldn't really call that a FlipSide at all until the warranty period has expired.

This was the thought process behind the whole purchase of the bikes. A brand new M510 motor is less than $600. The replacement battery was $270. The plan was to be able to keep the bikes going for years after the warranty ended. The main problem now is the little frame parts like pivot bolts and such. With Vitus going under it'll have to be custom made. A pain in the ass but still cheaper than a new bike.

This is SO on point. With four major recovery periods for me this year, riding the stuff I like, with the people I like would have basically been impossible without the e.

Hells bells thats a rough story. Glad it worked out

Ok ..so I'd rather just ask for common sense reasons and who we are on here???

What should I watch for on batteries, charging and safety for catching fire or whatever the hell they can do??

Recommendations and any tips are appreciated..

Neighbors house (he's an Encinitas firefighter) almost caught fire from a rc car battery exploding ...it was fully charged and sitting in a fire proof bag...I was sitting at my place his garage was open...loud BANG and a crap ton of smoke he came out and hit it with an extinguisher right away..

Said the most common house fire call they go on is rechargeable batteries...

Can't remember what bike you have. But all the major Emtb motor manufacturers batteries and chargers seem to be pretty safe. smart chargers and safety circuitry in the batteries.
But it's still sensible to use some caution. Ie. Don't leave a battery charging in your house when you're in bed sleeping or out of the house.

Scary stuff! I typically plug it in giving it enough time to fully charge before going to bed and unplug it when done.

Was it still on the charger or disconnected? RC cars often use Li-Po batteries which are more prone to exploding that Li-ion.

If you ever crash hard enough to damage an e-bike battery I'd be super cautious hey. Internal short circuits on those batteries are wild for the short circuit current

Do you think a skid to protect motor and or battery is a good thing ..?

aluminum 3m double stick tape type of thing. Andreani has one and a guy who races em back east makes a pretty cool motor one ..

Yeah John's battery for RC car was off the charger and charged already. He stuck it in a fire proof bag for storage...glad he did

Same here...
I unplug at night
My Trek EXe was easier to monitor because it was fully charged within 3 hours. The Evil is up to 6 hours for full charge, so for me more thinking is entailed. I usually charge the bike the afternoon before the next days ride as I don't like it to hold a 100% charge more than a day or so before a ride.

Almost certainly a LiPo battery without a built in BMS. Much morr dangerous than any mainstream ebike battery.

Did not know that, that's good info ..I don't do electric I just keep seeing stuff happen and news media is about as smart as jalapeno contacts...

I did see some bike batteries apparently xUsed fires on trail and in houses...? Is that just a freak thing or is there a way it could have been prevented via maintenance

Yeah the kenevo charges fast, Andreas takes more time . I do the same charge in evening take off charger before bed and it's good to go next day..

That's a good idea, thanks ..didn't think about it . I'm always charge and go...
I should charge it and wait like 5 days and see where battery is just sitting to get an idea...
I think the app shows a accurate level of charge . I don't have the screen and computer on mine ..

I leave my ebike plugged in all the time. Like Seth said, don't buy cheap electronics and you'll be fine.

Mine sat for a month with a full charge because of rain or I was sick. It was at 99% when i did eventually ride. I don't know if it depleted quicker because of it, I'll need to do the same ride off a fresh charge & find out. There is a little bit of a learning curve in regards to battery life & distance.

Now that I think about it, those two articles are more related than you would imagine. Those fuckers are everywhere now, and e-bikes are a little problematic for bear encounters, fast and almost silent. Perfect recipe to startle a bear just doing bear things.

Spent a day last weekend hooning around on a Stark Varg. Holy hell thats good fun - makes the Surrons look like a mobility scooter.

Blown away that they're comparable in price to the high end E-bikes, but i guess they're a lot simpler even though the battery and motor are much much bigger

why does everything in the land of the free is so regulated and doesn’t feel free at all?

afaik there is not one trail in europe that is banned for ebikes because we see them at what there are: just bikes with a little motor that you still need to pedal

putting then in 3 categories and allowing throttles was the biggest mistake ever
