Ok the other day I raced my HT and it was a tough and rocky course.

I crossed the finish line packed up and went home. When I got home my rear tire was totally flat. I took the tube out and replaced it. There was what appeared to be a large pinch flat hole in the side of the tube. I didn't look at the tire at this time.
I washed my bike, filled the new tube with air and left the bike to dry in the sun. I forgot about it for an hour or two when all of a sudden I hear a HUGE explosion from the back of my house. I run out to look at my bike is lying on it's side and the rear tire is FLAT!. As I inspect I see there is a large hole in the side of the tire. Apparently the sun heated the tube up and it exploded.
My question is, do you think the hole was in the tire from the race and since I didn't look I missed it and because of it the tube inside pushed thru it and blew up because of un-equal pressure, OR did the overheated tube blow thru the tire and cause the gash??

so you have no idea about the condition of the tire before the explosion?

The tube could have pushed through a hole in the tire and popped. Is the hole in the sidewall or the tread? I doubt a tube would pop and rip out a tread, but perhaps a sidewall. Perhaps there was a thorn or something in lodged in the tire that caused the tube to pop. If that's the case, why did it take so long to blow?

My guess is that the hole was already in the tire, and the tube pushed through and popped.

Yeah the hole was in the side wall.

You could have pinched flat at the race and then had the replacement tube pinched between the rim and tire or the tire wasn't seated all the way and it blew the hole through the sidewall when it popped.

I had one blow up on me about a month ago. The bead wasn't seated properly on the rim and she blew. Darn near blew a hole in my leg. Left a hell of a welt.

I would guess you had a small tear in the sidewall that you didn't notice and when you left the wheel out in the sun it did exactly as you describe. Kerpow! I don't see how pinching the tube between rim and tire would have blown a hole in the side wall.

:stupid:
I've done this on my commuter. I had my brake set up shoddily and apparently it was rubbing the sidewall a little. I left work one day.. flat tire. Change tube. Pump up to the normal 80 or so psi. Turn around to put everything back into my pack. BOOOM! Just like a gunshot. Some lady walking by dropped everything she had. It was pretty wicked. I just rode home on the flat since the tire was shot anyways.
