I've been using Rim Wranglers for a season now on my XC bike. I don't know that they are any better or worse than anything else, but they work fine for me.
Before I had disc brakes I used the wtb razor blade pads
they are a softer and less brittle than the shimano replacement
pads. They wear a little faster but there is no squeal.
If you ride in harsh conditions they also offer a dual
compound pad thats worth checking out they run $8-$10
per pair check around on the net.
Avid pads and carts. were the best I've found when I ran V's. I remember back in my BMX days I loved them red- orange Mathauser finned pads. I heard they are no longer made, but heard Kool-Stop has a salmon colored pad- wonder if it is any good? Buzz
The Koolstop salmon/orange pads are made from a softer compound than the black pads, so they are better for wet conditions, at the expense of not lasting as long.
On the other hand, I only run Koolstops salmon or ceramic now, and they seem to last a long time (longer than a year).
the inserts were too thin and therefore not so goog ,their other pads I didn't like cause they have that raised scraper edge on em, never could get full pad contact, WTB inserts are thick so are Avids.
I use kool stop vbrake mtb pads. I use the inserts. I like them because they are cheap and use them on my commuter bicycle.
They are cool for offroading. They don't burn out like graphite pads and they are pretty good when the rim gets muddy, wet or covered in the crap from winter riding.
The sand from winter riding burns them out fast I found. When I was a bicycle messenger last winter I went through one pair a month.
Believe me the best that the competition would do is last a week in the same circumstances. The bonus is that kool stop won't scratch your rims.

Well, Good News, then: the Kool Stop "salmon" pads are the exact "formula" of the patented Scott-Mathauser pads you're talking about. They are great pads for all conditions, and Kool Stop apparently negotiated for two years to buy the rights.
When my dual compound WTB's, mounted in Rim Wrangler II holders, wear out I will switch to Kool Stop salmon slide-ins!
Very cool then -I think Cambria has them salmon Kool Stops- need to get a rear set so I won't have to go disc on slalom bike. Thanks EBasil BRO... Buzzy
