I was thinking of either purchasing Avid Juicey 5's or 7's, I'm not sure yet, or Hayes El Camino's. Does anyone have any riding impressions of any of these brakes? Also, I have had reliability issues with Hayes in the past. Do the El Camino's hold up OK to wear and tear? And please, don't tell me to buy Hopes or HFX-9's. :nope:
Thanks.

El camino's are not out yet, and if they are out, nobody's had enough ride time to form any reliability impressions.

Jeez people.

Did I not just say that I DIDN'T want other brand recommendations? Oh well. Anyway, has anyone ridden El Caminos at all? If so, how do they seem?

I have two buddies who roll the Avid Juicy 7's, and they both rave. They said that modulation is their strength, while they're no slouch at power either. This is with the 8" rotors front and rear for both of them. My opinion, only from looking, is that the levers look like aftermarket levers, but the rotors aren't all that cool (although if they work, then I guess they don't need to look cool :) ).

I've been riding Hayes (MAGs) for 4 years and Juicys for 4 months, and I am much happier with the Juicys. I love their power and modulation. Regarding reliability, i have recently developed a lack of power/squealing problem when the brakes are cold but i am hoping to get that fixed and it could just be a pad issue. Also i had a wierd problem where the front brake would pull all the way to the lever unless you constantly pumped it but that seems to have been fixed with a bleed. The only drawback to the Juicys is they require a special kit to bleed them and a few fancy techniques to bleed them properly. Small issues aside, they are great brakes and i highly recommend them.

Cheers

The problems you had with Hayes were from the HFX9 levers. Why not get MAG levers, save some coin and have reliable, proven brakes.

The SX Trail comes with Hayes, so I'll ride them for a while and see how I like them. If I do end up breaking those levers too I'll get Mag Levers. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on either El Caminos or Juiceys.

Originally I wanted Hayes or Juiceys, but that was a while ago. I realized I can't afford them.

I second that. I've only had positive experience with my mags over the last year. I had xt 4 pots before and they were very good too. Both sets were reliable, had very great power and did the job. My Hayes tend to get me rotor schwing...but it's an easy fix...
