Question to ya'll..
Using 8" Avid mechanicals on my 50# DH bike
They work good !
I get arm pump bad no doubt..& don't ride the brakes/levers adjusted good, etc.
*Would switching to Hope dh04's on the back help...
I had those brakes 5 yrs ago & remember they were tits !
Anyone switched to a more powerful brake & helped them hold on ??

i guess they would help. a stronger brake would require less power to slow you down on sick dh. thats why they made mono 4s and 6s. but instead of stickin them on your back stick them up front that will help with the braking process and also put a bigger tire up front.

Towing the party line.
Changing to hydros will help yes, but so can many other things.

Changing to different bars may help, changing the angle on your controls may help, retuning your fork may help.

Try all that before you go and blow $300 on new brakes..

this costs about $10 and has greatly reduced the amount of arm pump I get.

What has helped me a lot is switching to thinner grips (Ruffians), keeping the cuff on my gloves loose, and moving the engagement on my levers really close to the bar.

lol exactly

spending 1500 on a monster is alot better than paying 300 for new brakes. or not payin a thing for different bar mounting possision.but yeh it would do a lot of good. and maybee go to a 2.7 or 2.5 up front depending on what you have up there right now. and also putting a better tire that has better nobs and braking power will help. im putting 2.5 minion dhs on my rig and i cant wait. and the nobs look like they will give me sick stopping power.good luck.

I have had great succes the engagement on my levers really close to the bar. When I ride a trail I know I also take my fingers of the brakes and just ride through some sections especially the rough stuff where rocks will slow you down and you don't need to break.

ditto. dial them in so that they engage right off the bar, and get good gloves from your local mx shop. <-- cheaper than at the bike shop

I don't know if you do this already, but moving your levers way in towards the stem and just using your index finger right at the hook at the end of the brake lever gives you more leverage on the brake and more fingers to hang on to the bar.

Here's a guess...You have a 50 lb. bike, which usually means 3.0 tires, heavy rims and tubes. Heavy wheels require a lot more braking force to slow down. I would recommend getting lighter tires, tubes and rims.

My personal experience has been that the Avid Mechs are quite powerful, but lack modulation compared to a good Hydro.

BLAMMMO! or dial your levers in and ride more. Windrock is steep so the more you ride the stronger you will become. I have frenchfry forearms and when the seasom started I had pump to but after riding the rock for a few months I don't have any pumpitude.

also actaully heard something about just find sometime from it and hang for as long as u can or pick up something heavy, bar bells would work best maybe 75 lbs one in each hand of course and just hold them for as long as u... that will help with your grip and forarms

lever set up, strong brakes and fitness are huge for eliminating armpump, but for those people looking into surgery because nothing else works, here is an option two people I know have had success with. Both found that the Manitou Dorado greatly reduced armpump. One guy couldn't do a 5 minute run without stopping at least twice because of armpump with his previous fork, (yes it was tuned properly) and once he got the dorado, which was new, and not broken in, and wasn't nearly as smooth feeling, arm pump was almost gone. Whether it is the flex or the carbon, I don't know, but for those with serious arm pump problems, this might be a better option than surgery.

take a piece of pipe or smoth cylidrical object tie a string to it and tie a weight to the other end of it.

hold your arms out STRAIGHT and roll the string up then slowly let the string back down. that will work your biceps and forarms. thats what climbers do to work forarms out. or you can do pull ups with the tips of your fingers or pushup on the tips of your fingers. just some suggegestions

Definatly go through your fork, if you haven't for a while
Before races i try ( if i have time ) to adjust the brake pads themselves closer to the discs so that any pressure on the levers results in immediate contact.
Try staying hydrated like over hydrate
