Brakes Dilemma

Right, I searched this topic, but I've got more of a dilemma than info/question.

I'm currently building my new DH/FR bike, and I've chosen the Stance Kingpin as my fork. Now onto brakes.

At first I was set on Avid Juicys 7 (185) or Hope Minis (185s), and for me as a shop employee, I'd get a decent deal on them. But after giving it some thought, I've come to consider the Hayes HFX9s. While I know for most people, there may be a huge performance difference in these brakes, but my last freeride rig had HFX9s (6") and I'd have to say I was pretty impressed with the power. My main complaint really was bleeding them which was possibly the biggest pain.

So my dillemma is, spend another 100-150 bucks on Avid/Hopes(and wait a bit longer for those funds), or just go with the HFX9s in 8" and just deal with those?

I'm excited to try the Juicys, as I am with any bike component, but saving that extr hundred bucks would be nice to put somewhere else on the bike. I know that HFX9s have a history of problems, but often times I've read on this forum, that thes eproblems are the result of the rider, not the brake. I'm 135lbs, doing light DH trails, freeride stuff, and some urban hucking, if that helps.

Let me know if I missed anything,

Byron

I know someone who had Juicys and he went over the handlebars and bent the lever with no effort. Def. go with the HFX-9's or the Hopes. Hopes are good!

Yea, I wish, but the M4s are abit out of my price range. While I really want a set of Hopes, I guess the Minis wont cut it?

Hahha, if I had the dought, I'd jump on it, as thats cheaper than for me at cost, but sadly not that much $$ here, and I prob dont need the M6s for a 130lb wimp likeme.

Mags arent that much more, if you go hayes spring for the mags. Not worth the potential issues that you may run in to if you run the HFX9. I've never run the HFXs, but general consensus on all the forums is that they are problematic. I've been super happy with the Mags, strong reliable and best of all 0 issues.

Avid BB7 mechs? Nearly as powerful as Juicies, just as powerful as any Hayes/Hope I've ridden, and the easiest brake on the market to set up (and by far the most adjustable). Also extremely cheap, and you never have to worry about bleeding. The only time I'd say don't get the BB7s is if you ride in mud often, since the cables are always gonna clog up a bit with that kind of stuff.

pfffft. not even a problem if you run full housing front and rear, and be sure to do a good job on the cable install. good end caps, seals, a bit of heat shrink tubing here and there.

i've run avid mechs on three bikes for the last four years this way, and have never had a line get junked up due to mud, even when riding/racing in the northeast for two of those years.

OTOH, i think the original poster is pretty set on hydros, so it doesn't matter.

Yeah fair enough, but it's still not 100% clogproof as hydros are.

it has been for me at least. :p

it's a trade off, i suppose, for the ease/simplicity of setup, and very easy availability of parts. i can get cable/housing anywhere, and pads/rotors compatible with the avids nearly anywhere. love 'em!

paired up with paul love levers makes for some smoooooooooth feeling, well modulating, pucker powering stoppage. my newest setup will have a 203mm rotor up front for the first time. anxious to try it out; today will be my first chance to compare to the 185mm i'm used to.

AHEM. sorry for the thread derail-age.

I know some people have had good luck with the hfx 9s but a lot of people have had real problems with them.
For the money, the Hayes Mag is the best thing out there. You won't find anything lighter, cheaper, or more reliable brake. Somebody will probably jump on me for saying that, but it's true.
Depending on what your hookup is, you can get great deals on ebay. I've bought complete sets with 8" rotors and adapters for $150-160.

That is what I was going to say. Or the Simano Deore's are good/cheap if you are looking to save some $.
