upgrade and hope shouldn't be used in the same sentance
Maybe if you knew how to spell SENTENCE, you'd be smart enough to realize that Hopes are dominant.

Just kidding, I'm not really that much of a jackass. But seriously, I've got some Hope Mono M4s on my new bike, and they are amazing. So much more modulation than Hayes. I highly recommend them.

I would stick with your XT's... but I agree, Hayes suck. I broke both my levers just riding around, no crashes.

I Hope I can slow down in time for that corner.

Hopes do have much better modulation than Hayes but at the expense of less power and too much lever throw (vs. Hayes lever being too solid). I hopped onto the new ladder at the top of the Bone Yard and even squeezing both levers to the bars (yeah, they've been bled) I couldn't slow down in time to make the corner.

Time to try Goodridge lines and EBC Red pads next weekend. Damn I Hope I eventually get these brakes working decently.

I've noticed that it seems to be a common problem with Hopes, but yeah, they look cool and all that... I wouldn't want them when I am going down the hill @ 40 mph knowing that not being able to stop on a dime isn't a possiblity. My buddy had Hope Minis for like 2 months (and bled them over and over in hopes to improve the stopping power), then crashed bad only because he could NOT get the bike to stop at a switchback. Instead, he ended up flying past the trail and into the shrubs that had a bunch of CACTUS and he was literally like a porcupine after climbing out. If you still have your hayes, you could adjust the lever in & out to your desire, but as far as sensitivity, you'll just have to get used to it.
I've had them on my DH bike or 3 years without any problems, and they are setup extremely sensititive to the touch (move them 1/8", you stop moving in your tracks). I've loaned my bike ONLY once to that same buddy of mine and he nearly did an endo (it is that sensitive). Oh yeah, I've only bled them once and replaced the pads several times.

We've heard several people comment on a lack of crazy stopping power from the M4 and M6 brakes. It's important to remember that these brakes have different sized pistons to improve power AND modulation over Hope's previous offerings. The easiest fix for the M4's is new pads; Shimano XT pads fit, and EBC makes those red pads mentioned here that improve stopping power immensely. XT pads do offer a bit more grab and still wear pretty well. Krispy had the best solution with his XTs; he ran a red EBC in one side of the brake and a stock pad in the other. This way you get more than a weekend out of one set of the EBC pads, and still have decent modulation.

As far as buying Hopes to replace your XT's, it's not going to make a huge difference in stopping power. Going to Goodridge lines and doing the split pads trick will make a much bigger difference and cost less than selling your XT brakes for cheap and buying a set of Hopes. You won't have neat machine work and gold-anodized piston heads though ;)

Man,
you guys sure do go through a lot to junk when you can just run Hayes.
Pull in the lever and stop. Super reliable and very helpful at the races.
The pads last a good while, and replacements pads are made by this bitchin' company called Hayes. They work great. :blah:

I busted through (meaning broke in 2) a tree with my levers and kept going with my hayes.

Hadn't thought of running one Red and one stock pad, might have to try that.

I don't understand the problem with hopes... I have a set of e4's that haven't got the best bleed in the world but will and have out stopped any other brake I've ever used. hayes, shimano, magura anything. You guys must be doing something wrong for them not to be stopping hard enough.

Back on the subject though. You've got some awesome brakes that shimano really should continue making. the only gripe I have with them is the lines. Throw some goodridges on there and it'll make a world of difference.

I also agree that Hayes are generally reliable, and easy to find parts for. The Hopes on my DH bike are soooooooooooooo much stronger than the XT's on my slalom bike (granted the Hopes have 8" rotors), but I think the Hopes are superior.
