That pic took me a minute.

As for the rotor, either this guy got a bad batch of rotors and Hope won't own up to it, or something is making the caliper jam on the rotor. I saw it happen on a front brake resulting a smack down.

I think we might need a poll to guess how many posts Acadian has on his collective internet message boards. I will put it at around 120,000.

Wow I found two crazy things about that thread. The guy weighs himself in stones and they also have an Acadian!
UK uses Stones as a unit when it comes to mass.

Wow...you're right, there is also an "Acadian" posting on that board!! ;)

I didn't see what frame he was using, but I wonder if the back end was flexing under braking and pushing the caliper bolt into the rotor. My bike used to have vibrate the same way he described in the thread and it was caused by the dropout flexing. When the dropout snapped cortina sent me a piece, along witht a new dropout, to reinforce that area. Haven't had anymore issues since.

He posted that pic in the tech fourm here, its nasty. Especially since thats his second rotor that failed like that. He said he was running it the proper direction, but I wonder.

Giant AC Team with vertical dropouts - so it's possible that the vibration caused this?
No way... that would have to be one hell of a vibration. The pattern is too uniform. Almost looks like something was rubbing on it. My guess is that his IS mointing bolts were a tad long. Even if he had enough clearance remember thing expand when they get hot. Operator error I'm pretty sure. Another one of those "I was just riding down the trail stories". Funny if you look a Hayes (yes I know this is not a Hayes) that is right about where the little mount washers would hit if they got kicked a little to the rotor side. That is why I use hardened AN aircraft washers. So they don't slid over and rub the rotor. Not that it happens very often, but is has happened.

Oh crap... I just went and looked at an AC. It's the pivot bolt above the dropout. It comes REAL close to the rotor. Right about where that rotor failed!!! Good call Luc.

i had a pivot bolt touch the rotor on my enduro, i could feel it in the entire bike, wouldnt call it vibrating though.

anyway my point is that when that happened there was no way i didnt notice there was something severely dragging and the noise was unmistkeable, plus the bolt head got "machined" by the rotor pretty quick, maybe it was the bolt head in this case but if so, one quick look at it should solve the case.

Time to try a different brand... or start riding with me so you can be smoother. I'm free to ride with so this should be easy... right?

Weighing 98 lbs and being smooth should not be confused with one another. Have you not beat down your wtb wheels? If not, you're the only one I know of who hasn't. Besides, I'm convinced that if Brian took a look at most people's wheels he would deem them unfit. I just keep riding them. It's not like I'm going to notice much with a big 2.7 tire and 8 inches of suspension.

Hey brian. Put more air in your tires. Don't worry about numbers, just put more in than what you normally use. For a rim to bend, the tire has to be squished out of the way first. Just don't let that happen and your rims will be untouched.

And town: let me ride your bike pretty please. :D

Yeah, with discs I beat my rims to crap before replacing them, I've got about 8 flat spots in my current wheel and can't feel one when I'm on the bike. Got some pretty funky spoke tension issues but it rolls just fine.

my last 823 had absoultly NO round surfaces left on it. Like yours, my spoke tension got really really messed up, and it was probably 10 times worse than yours because there were so many flatspots. On an urban ride i hit something and sent the rear way out of true, and couldnt true it at all because the spokes were so messes up

looking at the angle the bits snapped off at it looks like it has been run the wrong direction...

the 'spokes' on the disc should point forward. so when there's a LOT of force acting on the disc they're under compression. Steel is stronger under compression than extension as far as i know. Running the rotor the wrong way would try extend the 'spokes' on the rotor and no doubt snap at a lower force than if being run the correct way.

I mean, look at the run-up for that curb huck. Perfection. And the curb skinny in the middle of the road, wow. Really gets my blood flowing. Don't forget the curb drop machine in the foreground.
