I just got a survey from Mammoth Mountain and was stoked to see that one of the questions was:

If you race mountain cross and dual slalom, which event do you prefer to take part in?

:nope: Mountain cross

;) Dual Slalom

For those of you who were at Mammoth I bet you'd agree that the Mtn-X was lame. That is why I am strongly pushing for each and every person who gets one of the surveys to vote for Dual Slalom. Dual slalom makes for much better racing, the fastest racer wins. Look at Sam Hill at Big Bear! He has NO gates compared to the fastest Mtn-X racers and he got second because of his skills. Isn't that what racing is supposed to be about? If you're having any trouble marking Dual Slalom on the survey, just take a moment to remember the 2001 Mammoth dual slalom, that will clear your mind of any doubt.

Would this be Norba style old-school dual or WC style free-for-all? I assume the former. Not that I have any stake in this dilemma.

Also, it seems to me that the biggest issue has not been the format itself but, rather, course design. 4X can be awesome with the right course. Dual, both Norba and WC styles can both suffer from poor design and be just as lame as 4x.

Yeah like stickman said "the finish line should be at the first turn".
EXACTLY!!!

Why doesn't NORBA just make a new format of racing called 1 corner-X. They would only have to make a first straight and a corner and it would save them lots of time and money on course construction! Also the racing would go by so much faster!!! :D

When everyone got to Big Bear this year they looked at the dual slalom course and thought that it was total crap. I even thought it was a joke...until we started riding/racing it. It was ton's of fun and took 1/20th the dirt of a Mtn-X to construct. I have yet to go to ride/race a dual-slalom course that is as bad as the worst NORBA Mtn-x's

Well said. NORBA needs to bring in track designers like Tom with NBL or whoever designs the downhill BMX stuff and let them go nuts.

Vote 4X & develop your strategic skills.

Why can't they do both? It's not like these peoples have another job taking up their time. Norba needs to step it up!!! Both in course design and prizes available. This is a proffession for joe's sake, not just recreation. Just think how the NORBA folks would like it if they didn't get paid for all their work...

Everyone complains about 4X being too gate oriented with the lame as tracks that are being built, and I agree. But atleast you can work on your gates by training at a bmx track. Everyone has a local track they can train at. But DS, how do train for that? There a re very few of us that have trails that would really simulate the essence of that form of racing with its super-tight s-turns.

well...what I don't like about 4x are the chances of having someone take you out! With DS at least you have your own lane and not have to worry about whether or not someone is going to take you out in that first turn - or worse on that first big jump!!

The 2001 Mammoth DS course was the best ever (from my experience). Hopefully they do bring back DS. I remember when Norba went with MTNX, everyone on RM was all for it.

The KOM series has a good concept with the "Y" course. Not like the Austin TX finals where they force riders to crash into each other. But 2 separate courses that turns into one big bermed 2nd half.

Talked to Cleeton huh? It was so good to see him riding again after mammoth. My shoulder's o.k., my rib hurts more, especially when I sneeze :nope: OUCH! I think the shoulder will be fine though no broken collar bone-seperated shoulder, watch out for ice! :mumble:

Yeah, Like Cleeton...he got busted up and he was killing it. Didn't even know what happened till he was getting up off the ground. Some of us have to work the next day- there should be options. Dual and 4x.
