Chris Canfield used his Jedi skills today when after surgery, he proceeded to walk down the hall. I was on the phone with Lance and couldnt believe when he said Chris was walking towards him. Great news ! I guess this is standard procedure for a patient to walk after spine surgery to make sure everything is ok. The power of positive thinking ! Heal fast, fast buddy !

Below are some recent updates on Chris and Lance...

Friday afternoon - due to some unexpected complications associated with a pseudo anurysm, Chris was transferred via helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake, where he could be monitored and cared for by the vascular specialists and trauma team. It was great to be able to get him to SLC where they handle spinal injuries, and complications like this way more frequently than the hospital in Jackson. Tossing cookies on the heli was the highlight of his flight.

Saturday - Chris is all settled into the hospital, and the complications have somehow disappeared. He is scheduled for surgery this morning and moved to a "regular" room. Overnight, the docs had decided it is ok to begin cervical traction to allow the dislocated disk that was creating numbness in Chris' left arm to return to it's proper location. Success with the traction, Chris is finally a bit more comfortable. Chris' surgery is postponed due to another more critical patient getting his surgeon's slot today. Chris has a few visitors and finally catches up on sleep.

Sunday - Surgery finally! A few hours after surgery, Chris walked - yes - WALKED into the waiting room where Lance & Michelle and sisters Paige and April are hanging. (Photo attached) Chris does look like a guy who just had surgery - but more importantly, he was walking! and gives us a thumb's up!

Current... As of Sunday afternoon, there's a good chance Chris will be released Monday and begin his summer-long recovery. Stay tuned, we'll update you in another day or two with additional progress.

Additional notes. Thanks to everyone as well for keeping Lance in their thoughts too. It has been a tough few days for Lance. First, to have just had surgery on a broken leg and dislocated foot, (which includes a plate along his fibula that was attached by several screws). Then the very next day to hear your brother has had an accident and a broken neck. Next day was a full day at the hospital with Lance fielding over 100 calls from concerned friends. A long van ride to SLC the same day and back to the hospital to be with Chris. We're getting Lance back to Jackson soon to start his recovery and encourage a few days of much needed rest.

the governmental administrations (at least in the US) has proven time and time again that it cannot administer the tasks currently appointed to it, i don't see how this will be any different. it CERTAINLY cannot effectively administer the health care it currently offers (veterans), and it would be foolish to think that adding 200 million people will iron out the issues.

Talked with Lance today as well and although I have no new updates of Chris, I had an almost identical break and surgical repair about 3 years ago.

Total bill was around 60k but I had none of the emergency transport he had to utilize. I had an occupational therapist come in the next morning (surgery was late evening) and had me walking stairs, learning how to roll out of bed properly, walking up and down the halls. This is all standard procedure.
First month is rough as they want you to experience zero impact while the screws in the plate and the bone frabments they use as a bridge between the vertebrae in place of the disk fuse. This meant no riding in cars unless I was going to a doc appointment. Very hard to not go insane during that phase.
After a month I was riding a stationary trainer in my living room and another month later doing road rides outside. After 3 months I was mellow riding on dirt and have had a, for the most part, complete recovery. Still have numbness in the left hand but it works properly and has good dexterity. Just kind of feels asleep but it becomes normal after a bit and you don't think of it unless somebody brings it up.

As far as universal health care. Bring it on, I personally have no complaints about the postal service or the DMV beyond the 'pay to play' but don't think they are very good comparisons. Look at Medicaid or Social Security, those who utilize that seem to love it (the elderly). It will be a rough ride at first but the bugs will eventually be ironed out and it can only help those astronomical rates being charged since they have to cover those without insurance by utilizing those who do.
You could argue that we already have a universal health care anyways when you look at why the rates are so high currently.

Liberty, opportunity to get free choice etc is good indeed! But involving earning money for just more money in very important areas is not liberty for an individual and society, it is rather very bad thing! jon, no need to insult people! while i understand and agree that it's inappropriate to discuss the details of US health care politics in this thread, there is no need to insult people, of which i am sure that a fair number of them have contributed to chris' fund, just as you have done (have you????).

Chris and I both have accident insurance. The policy covers most accedents (biking is covered) and can pay for most injurys (like my broken femur and seperated foot). I'll be close finacially to the limit but Chris injury was far outside the realm of normal costs. Most insurance companys don't cover all the bills. As a small company we barely pay ourselfs a salary which doensn't include full coverage heath insurance. We have always put our money back into the company as much as we can so that we can afford to build more products each year. This accedent has the potential to hurt, if not kill our company. We are doing what we can to not let a accident stop us from doing what we love most, riding, building the best products and being innovative.

For all of the amazing people that have been so supporting, Chris and I are so grateful to have you in our lives. I can't imagine how much harder this would have been without all the love and support.

Definitely talk to your insurance company about your annual "out-of-pocket maximum", even if you have a PPO with a high deductible the maximum you have to pay in any one year is typically $5k-$10k, no matter how much your medical services cost.
