broken fingers - when to go to the dr

I smashed up my finger this weekend... I didn't think much of it at the time (not sure if it's broken or just banged up)... still don't really, but...

I spent some time on google this morning trying to decide if it was worth going to the doctor. It's the tip of my pinky finger - from the last knuckle up. The pain isn't too bad (not worthy of any drugs), but it is cold (the rest of the finger and all my other fingers are warm), the tissue is very firm, not soft like the rest of my fingers, and it's numb/tingly. Bending it or holding any pressure to it hurts pretty good, but normally I don't even notice the pain... it's just kind of a dull ache.

Jeezus, dude. How much is your co-pay? Get thee to a doctor.
:stupid:

I'm always a little confused when someone with health insurance asks if they should be seeing a doctor ;)

For $10 or $20 or whatever the copay is, it's just worth the peace of mind. There are plenty of frivolous things to spend money on, and finding out whether or not the end of your finger is about to fall of isn't one of them :p

MMMMM.......tissue death. Don't worry, when it starts to go gangrene because it's not getting any circulation, they will most likely only need to amputate a couple inches of surrounding tissue, oh wait, on your hand that's quite a lot.

In all seriousness, I think you answered your own question. It's cold, the rest of your hand is not. It's not getting blood, go to the doctor.

For what it's worth they don't do alot (as far as I'm aware of) with broken fingers. I had busted one pretty good as a kid (well high school), went to a doctor, took some x-ray's, gave me a fancy finger splint and off I went. To this day it's still messed up from being broke. Sure it healed and what not but I'd never get a ring over my right ring finger as the knuckle area is huge (I wanna say like the second knuckle area) LOL.

If I had health insurance I'd go no questions asked, but if I didn't I'd break out the finger splint and duck tape and deal with it. It's gonna hurt either way it just depends what resources you have at your disposal.

It's not the co-pay... it's the sitting in a waiting room for 2 hours just to be referred to a specialist who can't see me for 2 weeks.

I don't care if it's broken... I just want someone would tell me if it is going to fall off if I don't do anything about it.

I suspect that only a dr will be able to tell you that for sure. :D

Don't go to the doctor, just listen to all of these people on an internet forum if you need medical advise.

I mean, doctors just spent all that time in school getting drunk anyway.

:agree: doctors suck
no kidding.

I just got back... sat in the waiting room for an hour and 45 minutes, had xrays taken, then was told I had to make an appointment with a bone doctor. grrrr... more freakin doctors.

But anyways, it is indeed broken... a "non-displaced crushing injury".

Jeezus! What's the story out there? I don't think I've ever waited more than about 15 minutes to see a doctor............

I agree (and would approve if I could figure that out).

I busted my thumb last summer (at least I think so, never went to the doctor). It still hurts, but it moves, and isn't that all that matters anyhow? It never felt numb and cold though. Did they tell you if your finger was going to fall off or not?

The only lasting problem is that I have to open beers with my left hand now.
