So, I just came into possesion of an old Steel Frame. I decided to make it into a Fixie. I really dont want to spend a lot of money on it, and all I need now is a rear Hub. I figured I may as well just get a whole built rear wheel, but the problem is, the bike right now has 27" rims on it. Only built fixed gear wheels I can find (on ebay) are 700cc.

So the question is, what should I do? Get a new wheelset @ 700cc? or do you guys think that I could find a 27" fixed gear wheel?

(Spam is welcome if you have one.... send me a PM)

Just built up a fixie. Might be easier to build up/get off Ebay a 700c fixie wheel. I'd advocate getting a flip/flop hub, just in case something goes awry on the fixed side, at least the freewheel will get you home. Gear ratio - Sheldon Brown has some good advice, I found a chainstay calculator via Google that allowed me to find a ratio that would work with vertical drops, and also gave me speed for a given RPM, and ratio. For reference, I'm running a 46-16, which works out to 80 gear inches, which gives me a cruising speed of about 21mph around 90RPM. Any more questions, let me know. Be aware, it's addicting.

Get whatever rear wheel you can and don't run a brake in the back. You don't need one with a fixie. The difference in diameter is only big enough to screw with the brakes anyway.
