dad, going to be a christmas present. I had a Iron horse sinister on layaway for myself..but just went out and bought a giant AC1. So he said he would take the Sinister..but he really wants a FS as its easier on his back ( hes getting older!). Hes tried a 2002 Giant WARP DS2 18.5" in canmore ( he rented it) and he LOVED it.. So i decided to build him up a Giant warp frame. I found a new 2002 Ds1 frame in 18.5" with an LX front derailleur, seat post and some other odd and ends for $375 canadian. Hes 150 Lbs, and rides aggressive XC, no drops though. What would be a smart build. I want to keep it around $800 cdn ( i'll be buying used parts)..I already have a new LX rear derailleur and some other parts. What would be a good choice for:

Wheelset, fork, crankset??
I'm going to use deore shifters and probably avid V's.

Thanks

I'd give a shot at an entire Deore component group. Grab some Deore hollowtech cranks, hubs, maybe some Mavic X317 rims. The new budget Marzocchi fork looks nice (MXC I think).

Deore stuff is awesome for the price. It's about as low end as you want to go for a 'real' mtn bike too. But all the stuff is very good for normal use. For a wheelset: Deore hubs mated to Sun Rhyno Lites. Tough, not too heavy, and super cheap. IRC Mythos XC tires - cheap from MEC and work great.

What is the difference between Deore, Deore XT, and XT blah blah?

Is there an XT and an Deore XT?

I know in general it's LX < XT < XTR.

Actually it is

Deore -> lx -> xt -> xtr

Weight mostly. And some durability. Otherwise they are all similar. I run Deore or LX parts because they work, are cheap to replace (which I need because I break parts often).

If I'm not mistaken, Price Point has an LX build kit for under 500 bucks with wheels. Without wheels, I think it's under 400. You are going to have to check, but I am almost sure I have seen it in their catalog or website in the last couple of days.

OK, that's what I thought. But help my feeble brain. I just got an XT derailer and it says "Deore XT" on it. Does that mean it is XT-- or is Deore just some sexy sounding name they like to use?
