I know BS is behind this...

Customers craving fresh crustaceans will have to look beyond Whole Foods Market Inc. after the natural-foods grocery chain decided Thursday to stop selling live lobsters and crabs on the grounds that it’s inhumane.
Here's the part that I don't understand

From now on, Whole Foods will only sell frozen raw and cooked lobster products at its more than 180 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, said Margaret Wittenberg, vice president of quality standards. And the chain will only deal with suppliers meeting their standards for humane treatment, handling and processing.
So they figure that the lobsters are going to be somehow better off getting boiled at a factory then in someone's kitchen.

well theyre stopping the sale cause the way the company handles the lobsters is inhumane...namely, that they keep them for up to 7 months after capture...
They aren't actually opposed to the sale of lobster itself...so that first quote is...wrong...

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Organic supermarket chain Whole Foods announced Friday it will stop selling live lobsters effectively immediately, citing the inhumane treatment of the animals.
http://money.cnn.com/2006/06/16/news/companies/whole_foods/index.htm?cnn=yes

and for the second part, theyre still selling frozen raw, and cooked lobster, cause the companies that process those two items treat the lobsters humanely

The first quote in my post is identical in content to yours, so how is it wrong if yours isn't?

how in the hell do you treat a lobster "humanely" ?

it's a saltwater cockroach. not a human being.

drop that thing in some boiling water and serve it up up with a slab of butchered cow and enjoy.

They used to have arcade games in Japan where you'd have to pluck a lobster out of the tank (instead...for example a teddy bear) to win the prize. Not surprisingly it got shut down, not for humanatarian reasons but because the lobsters tasted like sh*t.

its not identical in content...yours says theyre halting sales of live lobsters "on the grounds that it is inhumane". meaning selling lobster is inhumane...metions nothing about the reason being the way they are treated being inhumane...

Your quote gives the impression that theyre against selling the lobster all together...which is how you drew the conclusion that the second statement you quoted in contradictory...

But its not that they believe the sale of live lobsters is inhumane...its that they believe that holding them for up to 7 months in tanks is inhumane...they believe that the lobsters should be caught, and sold almost immediately, thus reducing the "pain" or whatever a lobster feels in captivity...

And to sanjuro
You don't really believe that, do you?
Generally, the companies that process and freeze seafood are located at the ports themselves, or at least near them. So yes, i do believe that most of the time, the lobster and crabs are frozen within a day of being caught and brought to port.

Clams Have Feelings Too - NOFX

Birds are dumb, 'cause small bird brains
But so are kids and old people
Some birds talk, most others sing
I don't see you eat a talking bird

Pigs smell bad, they roll in poo
But so do kids and elderly
I don't see you chop off an old man's feet
Put 'em in a mason jar and pickle them

No chowder for you, 'cause clams have feelings too
Actually they don't have central nervousness
No manhatten style, clams have the right to smile
Come to think about it, they don't have a face

They have no face, no place for ears
There's no clam eyes, to cry clam tears
No spinal cord, they must get bored
Might as well just put them out of misery

I don't beleive it's selfish
To eat defenceless shellfish

No chowder for you, clams have feelings too
It could happen to you, clams have feelings too
I don't think they do, clams have feelings too

The most painless way (for the lobster/crayfish) is to chill it in a frezzer before tossing it in boiling water.... the chilling process slows it's brain ddown and makes it drowsy.... till it goes to sleep (permanently if you fully frezze it ), it's pretty painless compaired to just throwing it straight into the boiling water. :)

What's inhumane about that is that it will kill the flavor!

I have found a couple of online places that overnight lobsters to you that are pretty good. Fresh and tasty.

I've never been to a Whole Foods market. They seem rather pretentious, to me.

So lobsters have feelings now, right? Amazing. If keeping lobsters is inhumane, I guess the whole fishtank industry, tropical fish, etc.. that's just completely immoral

People are stupid.

Uhm - it's overly pretentious. It's the corporate hippies and there is nothing worse. I went a few times in Austin, and stop by for beer on occasion, but it's just wannabe hippies. You think SoCal is bad, they all got tired of logical argument and moved to Austin with the rest of them. It's the only place you'll see lesbian hippies in Range Rovers and BMWs.

I agree with Burly's last comment.

Hate to burst your bubble..... most of the time the overnighted lobsters are tank lobsters (meaning they have been caught and kept in a tank for some period of time) not fresh caught.

There are some that ship boat to you but its the exception not the rule.

That's why I said that I found just a few that will overnight lobsters that are only a couple days from the sea. Most lobster that everyone gets is many weeks out of the ocean, sitting in holding tanks (If your lucky), or more commonly, held on dry ice.

For real good lobster you really have only two choices... catch it yourself or get it at the dock, fresh off the boat.

Oh ye of such little faith...

You're not missing much. They sell decent, but overpriced meats, strait up sh1ty fish. Their lobster just sucks, Ralphs has much better lobster. Their fish department has that horible fish stink to it. You're much better off going to Trader Joe's for fish, cheese and wine. A quality butcher for red meat, and Maine or France for lobster.

Knowing the way corporations work the decision to stop selling live lobsters was probably a finacial one. Some genius just decided to put an animal rights spin on it. Free advertising that hits your targeted market segment. Brilliant.

*shrugs* I dunno about it's feelings, but I do care about how much pain it cop's when you cook/kill it. So all the ones I catch, I'm gonna continue chilling in my freezer for an hour or so before the boiling alive bit.

Why not marinate them in beer? They'll be so pissed they won't feel a thing and it will add a certain je ne sais croix to the flavour.

A) that sounds disgusting.

B) lobster is much more delicious and rewarding when you catch them yourself. (i learned to catch spiny's while diving in the Fla keys earlier this spring - a delicious lifelong skill :thumb: )

wholefoods is a bunch of overpriced crap too. if you want organic foods, grow them yourself.
