I read the speech in its entirety and I can't say that I was particularly impressed, though I will ascribe some portion of its mediocrity to translation losses. There were certain points of truth within it, but overall, it sounded a bit too much like a rhetorically melodramatic pep rally. Yes, Bush could be more a more modest, inclusive and accommodating "Leader of the Free World" in the arena of international diplomacy...but he's too unpolished to be the Devil. Yes, some of our economic policies are still a bit too reminiscent of the imperial model from which they were initially hatched...but greed infests decision-makers in ALL nations, so U.S. Gov't. culpability is remarkable only in scale. Yes, our politicians and power-brokers are control-freaks who seek to do all they can to prevent the flow of largesse from being interrupted...but France, China, Russia, etc. are similarly guilty and pointing us out as the yellow jersey does little to conceal their own aspirations for it. Yes, our leaders seek to cultivate or proselytize our particular brand of democracy throughout the world whenever the opportunity arises...but what government yet hasn't and what better model exists to clone from? Yes, some of Bush's(handlers') word-choice in his speeches appeal to the frightened or somewhat paranoid elements in our society...but that is simply linguistic "dancing with he who brought you to the ball". I could go on and on, but overall, the speech sounded like one better suited for an annual IWW coffee-shop meeting or Noam Chomsky book-signing than for world leaders and delegates at the U.N.

my friend told me his theory on chavez being so outspoken against bush today and i think it sounds quite plausible. leadership is always changing in south american countries because of political revolutions or the leader dies somehow(he said plane crashes were quite common), i wouldn't be all too surprised if the cia had a hand in some of these. but with chavez causing such a controversy and getting so much attention from the media, it's not like he can just be silenced without people asking questions. i believe he said something along the lines of, "if i am killed, you will know who did it," in one of his speeches. basically what he said was, "i'm onto you american f***ers." try and discredit this as much as you want, but i think it makes sense.
