hopped on my bike today and noticed a strange noise. the rear hub is making a click(almost a napping kinda sound) doens't do it all the time
more often coasting than pedalling but happens in both situations. any idea what this is? is the hub trashed. any quick fix? I've got a race in a week.

I don't know if its the freewheel..never had a rear hub problem before. don't reall know much about their inner wprking. if it is the freewheel can I replace just that. it very well could be.

what i meant was, when you coast, the freewheel has pawls inside of it that make a clicking noise really fast. like a ratchet. you sure it isnt that noise? which is normal.

Bad news. Real hubs are no longer made. The front hubs were ok, but the rear ones sucked bad. You can still find them on Ebay cheap, but I wouldn't bother.
As fars as the sound goes, the possibilities are endless, probably a problem with one of the pawls. I wouldn't try taking it apart since you wont be able to buy parts and the old one's may not go back together once its apart. Either go ahead and ride it and keep your fingers crossed (but it's an undisputable fact that if something is gonna break, it will be during your race run) or get an XT hub from JensonUSA and do a quick wheel build. Sorry I don't have good news.

mCA...NO!!!!..your as bad as BJ.....I've been riding for many many years. I know that at least. I know what the standard noise is....

ya I checked Reals site and noticed they are only making road gear now. looks like I'm SOL..the problem went away yesterday. today I did some work on the bike prepping it for the race today..hopped on and it came back...the thing is I'm too damn broke to buy a new hub right now. I just for see myself cranking hard on the pedals and the freewheel slipping or locking on my and something bad happening in the race...ugh. guess I'll keep my fingers crossed.
