So according to my xray I broke three ribs and we think I nuked my rotator cuff too.

The cuff I can deal with, drugs are rad and so is ice.

Any idea how long its going to take for the ribs to heal? I went for a ride today, pulled over and barfed it felt so awesome in there. Right now is prime XC weather here in Reno, so I am bummed I am going to miss it.

When you stop puking while exercising, it's OK to resume exercising.
Let them set up for a few days then see what's comfortable.

Been there many times with the ribs. Not fun for the first few days.
I once had the flu with freshly broken ribs. Constant sneezing and puking doesn't promote healing too well.

Rotator cuffs don't heal too well, at least mine didn't. A life of competitive swimming destroyed mine back in college and they require surgery I never took time for/could afford.

Heal up.

I'm nursing a bad rib or two right now. Had a hard fall on a night ride in May. Hurt for a bit and I never went to see a Doc. Flash forward to last night where I was the uke for one of my students and whichever way it healed from the initial injury came "undone." Going to the Dr tomorrow.

NORCAL is the hizzle
I cracked two ribs two months ago and am just now able to deal with the hurt enough to get back to working out. For a while I couldn't laugh, cough, or sleep on that side without feeling like I was getting stabbed in the gut, let alone anything involving twisting my core or any ab stuff. Sucks and there isn't much you can do except give it time.

But I have no idea what a "uki" is.

Over there somewhere.
What's the difference between a snowman and a snowwoman?

Broken ribs suck. And it definitely hurts to laugh when you have busted ribs.

Snowballs.

The rotator cuff pain is nothing all that new. Years of biking, rugby, snowboarding and motorcycles have all taken a toll. Its kind of a constant thing, but I think I may have finished the job this time. I'm hoping to find some sort of a way to not to have to get cut for this one. Shoulder surgery is a black art, and I am unconvinced that my doctor can do much good at this point.

The ribs just suck. Ate the top tube/stem on my dirt jumper last week. Haven't been right ever since. I need to work out, I can feel myself getting fatter. I'm not drinking, I'm not jamming on fast food like I enjoy doing when I get hurt, and I still feel like I am getting fatter at this point.

Going to go swim in the warm pool tonight, see if I can't get things to settle down in this **** show. Oh well, go big and sometimes you pay up for it.

Thanks for the advice.

Last time I did that I **** my pants and was convinced for 48 hours that I was Richard Nixon.

It was going pretty well until I convinced myself that my dog was Henry Kissinger, and that he was telling me that my neighbors were the Russians and that I should nuke them.

Then things got out of hand....

The "cuff" you can deal with?

Welcome to hell buddy.
Yeah no ****, unless you've only experienced minor rotator cuff pain then you ddidn't do much damage.

I'll take broken ribs again any time of the pain of a rotator cuff, and the delicacy required to nurse one back to full health without constant pain....

Oh the shoulder is killing me, but this isn't that new of a thing.
What concerns me is 1. The doc told me its pretty much jello in there and 2. the burning pain I was used to is gone, and is now replaced with just that "I think I am going to die" pain when I lift my arms above a certain point.

The ribs are what's really bugging me. The doc told me last week not to fly, which stopped me from going to New Orleans, and I am worried is going to keep me from a last shuttle run this weekend and from flying to Seattle.

Guess I'll eat some pills and take it like a man. What else can ya do?

I have no idea where I am
If the pain gets too bad and you need a distraction from it, stab yourself in the thigh with a fork. You will forget all about those ribs and the side of jello shoulder.

Chicks dig scares man.

I was married to a doctor for years.

I am only into real medicine. Cut me open, feed me drugs, stitch me back up, send me to PT, bill my insurance.

don't make me kick your ass
Bones generally take 6-8 weeks to heal. Get the rotator cuff surgically repaired. There isn't much the medical profession can do about broken ribs.

BTW, I'm not a doctor, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Ate the ribs Broken.... or just fractured? If they are fractured just take it easy till you can handle it. If they are broken, you need to take it easy for a bit. Like others said, if you push it, you can slow the healing, or worse puncture a lung.

I used to say that for about 5 years , then I finally had surgery and had it fixed . after all was said and done , All I could think was why did I wait so long to get it fixed.
:stupid:

I had separated my shoulder, would just pop out of the joint all the time after awhile. Lots of pain. Finally went to a doc, had the surgery, followed PT - shoulder is way stronger now than it was. Less than 4 weeks out, I was doing pushups at PT (under the trainer's care).

Back to lifting weights, haven't had an issue since. Definitely worth it!!

Really? I heard the surgery wasn't that effective and it increased the risk of arthritis down the road...that's why I never had it. As for the ribs, I cracked several ribs a few years ago and I rode downhill around 4 weeks after the incident and cracked them again :D Make sure you're healed before you get back to riding.

I'm usually doing something athletic every day and have been down for two months (broke my wrist at the same time as the ribs). After a couple weeks or so I learned to embrace the sedentary lifestyle. (Bourbon and percocet were especially helpful the first month, but I guess that's not for you these days.) Anyway it's a temporary blip in a lifetime of fun. Just deal, let it heal, and you'll be back soon enough.

It varies person to person. The guy next to me at PT, he had the same surgery, same time. He was barely out of his sling and I was already doing light weights. Also, it depends on the surgeon. I saw a specialist who was a former Olympic team doc :D

The doc told me that there is an increased risk of arthritis...BUT, my shoulder was past the point of PT without surgery being effective. And every time I rode, it seemed to just pop out. On my last ride before, my friends were behind and saw my whole arm just go dead in a turn, I ate $hit hard.

I'm already going to have some serious issues later from my broken leg/ti rod, so I figured it was worth it. In my opinion, its totally worth it.

I crashed up at Highland mtbp on like the 23 of Oct and banged myself up pretty good. Thought my ribs might be broke so I ended up going to the doc for xrays a few days after the crash. Fortunately nothing was broke but they still hurt enough that I wouldnt even want to imagine how it would feel it they were broke. Its about 2 weeks later and I still cant lay on that side. Good luck with the breaks.

I've broken my ribs a bunch of times as it turns out.

You can see, if you look close, the calcium deposits on my ribs.
Wow, I'm not very smart.
