A. there's no way you're going to smoothly thin out the whole spoke
B. there is more to butting spokes than grinding down the middle of the spoke... the forging process changes some of the properties of the metal, and you're not goingto do that with a dremel
I've found I can save A LOT of weight by building my wheels entirely spoke-less. Not quite as stiff as a traditional setup, but you can drop like .5 lbs per wheel, and that's unsprung rotating weight.

As toshi knows pretty well, building up my new bike is getting sorta expensive, so I'm going to try to sell you on my "magic, make you bike lighter with helium kit"
Here's how it works: I duct tape all the holes in your frame shut and fill you frame with, yep, you guessed it, Helium. Then I fill your tires with helium, and if you have an air fork... pressurize with helium. If you're still not satisfied I'll even tie some of those shiny mylar balloons to your handlebars. Guaranteed weight savings.
I'll zip tie everything I can zip tie through and do away with the nuts and bolts. Plastic vs Metal.. chainguide, I'll slap an old STX-RC front der for my chain retention and pray to allah my chain won't drop..
