I take it you are referring to the metal knob at the end?

It's probably not some standard dim like 1/8" or 3mm. Try using more precision.

Instead of measuring the actual cable end, strip down an unused shifter unit and measure the inside of the cable seat. The cable end "standard" should be slightly less, say 2/10 of a millimeter less?

Another, easier, option is to measure the inside of an oldschool frame shifter or time trial bar shifter.

Tricky inquiry, Shimano don't list it in their tech section, and neither do SRAM, they only list housing dimensions and the inner wire thickness, never the end bit.

I seem to recall that Campag was slightly larger than all the others? Or was it smaller? I just remember in the mud 80's when i worked in a shop that we always asked if the bike had Campag shifters or not and we made sure the cable was Campag compatible.

Campag are smaller, if you want to run "standard" wires in them you will need to grind down the diameter of the metal slug on the end. Same goes for Sachs systems.

I also am curious to Woodys question, what gives?

that's why we drink it here
Diameter and length of the lug are between 4.5 and 5mm. I had to call a manufacturer for that info. I thought it would be a tighter tolerance than that.

I tried taking apart a sram shifter to do some reconnaissance, but to no avail.
That bright silver bit you see is the exposed lug.

They just have a plate with a hole through it. No help at all.

Jon, it's for the RASE post. I'm trying to get away from using a proprietary cable.

if you are running a sram or shimano shifter you use a larger head (the cylinder shape) campy uses the smaller one. Brake cables would have the cable welded to the side of the cylinder, and would be much larger, the cable is also thicker.
