The article extends much past the ride with Ahnold, as entertaining as that may be

What you already knew, but probalby need to hear again:
The problem with police officers and firefighters isn’t a public-sector problem; it isn’t a problem with government; it’s a problem with the entire society. It’s what happened on Wall Street in the run-up to the subprime crisis. It’s a problem of people taking what they can, just because they can, without regard to the larger social consequences. It’s not just a coincidence that the debts of cities and states spun out of control at the same time as the debts of individual Americans. Alone in a dark room with a pile of money, Americans knew exactly what they wanted to do, from the top of the society to the bottom. They’d been conditioned to grab as much as they could, without thinking about the long-term consequences.

Did you read the part where Arnold admits the entire governor thing was a joke that went too far?

I don't know if I should be appalled or admire the fact that he actually stuck it out and tried to do a good job.

You were in this state when he got elected right?

That made me hide in the woods and completely ignore local politics for years. From the recall to reagan part duh, I realized I moved from florida to texas.

Yeah, and I actually thought he did a decent job, all things considered. This state is ungovernable, given the idiot initiatives process we have.

But still, to find out it was all a lark...on the bright side, it kept Daryl Issa out of the governor's mansion, and I think we can all agree that was probably a good move.

To me it's just further proof that it's not the guy in the big chair that makes much of a difference. You could have put a flaming bag of poop there and gotten about the same results.

As much as that's a seductive view, I don't think it's correct.

Obama sucks balls, but McCain would have been a total disaster, and probably would have started a shooting war with China or North Korea by now, along with various assorted trade wars. Sure, Arnold wasn't great, but the alternatives being pushed by the state GOP were worse.
