I'm going to be purchasign a new camelback tonight... probably the Mule. Those of you that own one... is the cargo space usable? My rogue has a pouch (supposedly cargo space) that I can't hardly fit anything in, so it's pretty useless.

I need to fit basic tools, a small first aid kit, a tube or two, and my digital camera (about the size of a point and shoot 35mm). Unfortunatly the place I'm buying it from won't let me carry in some gear to see how it all fits. The camera is my main concern because of it's size.

I have 1, you should be able to fit all of that in there and more. I can fit everything I need to carry even on long epic rides without a problem. And I never even use the mesh pocket thing. I am just conservative and throw everything in a zippered pocket.

You should be fine, but it will be a snug fit with two tubes and the camera.

I have one of these on the front of my CamelBak ($10). Made for a phone, but it holds my camera just fine. It's nice to not have to take the CamelBak off every time I want to take the camera out.

I have one of the old red ones, it fits everything I could possibly need. Maybe it is a Hawg now that I think about it though...

that's cool...I'd like one for my camera...is it soft inside? I have an old Topeak Alien tool carrier thing that fits my camera but its not soft inside...i don't want my little viewer screen scratched up...what is that called? And heres a smiley for the mention of the topeak alien...

I have an older tan-colored Mule. I think that the new one is a little bigger. My Mule is the older (4 years?) version w/ mesh upper pocket, medium zipper pocket, and very small zippered change pocket. It also has the criss-crossed bungy. I ride with:
-full resevoir
-leatherman
-allen multitool
-small chain tool
-2 tubes
-pump
-car keys
-wallet

There is more than enough roo for all of it, as well as some other accessories that you moght want 'the man' knowing about.

I just visited Camelback's site. The new MULE is much larger than what I have. A little too large imho. I remember looking at them at my old shop a couple of weeks ago and thinking that they were a little larger than tey needed to be. Unless you are going on a multi-day trip, I waould say that the MULE is plenty big for any "normal" ride.

The HAWG was red. My brother has it. Is it ~4 years old? My tan MULE is from the same era.

I like my camelbak mule. I haven't had to put a camera in it but I do carry my shock pump, black tar heroin, tire pump, patch kit, tools, gum, and some other stuff that is sitting down on the bottom.

That little pouch is not soft at all. It's just fabric, but it's strong. No padding of any kind. Every time I fall, I try to land on my side so my camera does not take a hit.

My clip on camera holder is soft and has padding - but it is also a little too big for the camera and it tends to flop around a bit when clipped to my shoulder straps. I got it at EMS and like the Baboon's it is designed to hold a cell phone.

Something in between what Babs has and what I have would rock - but I've yet to find it.

Damn! I can't fit a footlong sub *in* my zippered pocket.... maybe they're making the zip pockets bigger now?? I usually have to wrap the footlong in my windbreaker and use the shockcords to keep it all on the back of the pack.

Get a blowfish. I don't think I like my mule too much, but still carry it.

I like my Mule, but I wish I'd bought the Hawg. When the bladder is totally full (in the Mule), the storage space becomes pretty tight.

Well exactly what do you like on your Sub? A nice "wrap" would be perfect.

It could fit in the same zippered pocket that holds my shock pump and tube. (way down on the bottom now that I am tubeless) It runs the entire length of the pack, just a bit shorter than the compartment for the bladder.

ya the mule is nice until you got 100oz in there. then its super tight, not alot of cargo room. And i wish i could use it as a mini backpack sometimes but it cant really hold much other than bike stuff. It works well for riding, just wish it expanded a bit more for when it was full of water.

Ahhh... they're definitely bigger now, then. My pump is on the outside in a little "pump pocket" type thing.

And that wrap is too little for an Epic Ride.......... :D

I got the Mule for an Xmas present and I absolutely love it!!! It will definitely hold all that gear. In fact, I've had all the things you mentioned (except the first aid kit), plus a jacket, arm pads, and my leg pads on the outside. It is so comfortable too. :thumb:

It will all fit with ease...

I put a camcorder, basic tools, tubes, and some other crap. It all fits fine in mine.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Victor... I needed the pack for this weekend's trip to Jim Thorpe, so I had to suck it up an buy it locally. I checked out the Camelbak Mule, BlowFish, TrailBlazer, and a similar EMS hydration pack. I went iwth the Mule because it's a bit more streamlined than the others, and has more than enough room for my stuff... even when full of water.

I have the new mule and you can fit TONS in there, i used to have the bigger blowfish and i still feel the mule could fiat as much as it cargo wise. Should have no problems. The new part that rests on your back to allow air flow is the business, feels so much better than the old ones. GO GET IT!
