It's an ok price, nothing great. Better off getting a 28-70 2.8L, you lose IS but at that range it really isn't needed. If you really need the extra width dow low then go with the 17.

the older L zoom is 28-70...the newer one is 24-70.

17-55 is an ideal focal range on a 1.6x crop body...and as far as IS goes, have you ever used (or wanted to use?) a tripod w/ a short FL lens?

and H8r, you should crop that a little, and see if you can clean up those colors. I'm lazy, so I'll rely on a B&W to hide any flaws..
I don't like crops unless they are totally necessary. I like all the tubes and extra hospital stuff. It was the moment.

Colors, well there's no re-touching on that one at all. I can tweak the WB a bit.

by the way, adorable subject!! :)
no offense, but that is an absolutely horrid black and white conversion. imo, b&w photos always require more contrast than colored photos. unless of course you want the lack of contrast for artistic effect.

case in point: here's a pic that i took a few years ago. while i didn't use the conventional way of converting it to black and white, i dropped down the saturation all the way and then bumped up the contrast quite a bit iirc.

before:

after:

edit: i just realized that the after photo needs more exposure to darken the whole thing up a bit, but i'm a photoshop noob, i prefer shooting b&w film then doing all of the developing and printing myself.

Ya i actually edited it back to 28 from 24. I have used the 24-70 and other than build quality I didn't see any difference from my sigma 17-70.
